Mellieħa Elderly Home AC Woes: CareMalta, Active Ageing Deny Fault

CareMalta, Active Ageing at Odds Over Mellieħa Home’s AC Woes

In the heart of Mellieħa, the summer sun beats down relentlessly on Dar il-Madonna, a CareMalta home for the elderly. Yet, the air conditioning units, meant to provide respite, have been faltering, leaving residents and staff grappling with sweltering heat. The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (GWU) has stepped in, issuing directives to address the issue, but CareMalta and Active Ageing, the home’s operators, deny any fault.

AC Units on the Fritz

Residents and staff at Dar il-Madonna have been battling with inadequate air conditioning for months. The home’s AC units, installed along Triq San Pawl, have been struggling to keep up with Malta’s scorching summers. “It’s like living in a sauna,” says a staff member who wishes to remain anonymous. “The elderly residents are suffering, and so are we.”

GWU Intervenes

The GWU has taken notice of the situation, issuing directives to CareMalta and Active Ageing to rectify the issue promptly. The union has expressed concern for the health and well-being of the residents and staff, citing potential heat-related illnesses. “We cannot stand idly by while our members and the elderly are put at risk,” says GWU President, Paul Pace.

However, CareMalta and Active Ageing have refuted the claims, maintaining that the AC units are functioning adequately. In a joint statement, they assert, “We are committed to providing a comfortable and safe environment for our residents. The AC units are in good working order, and we deny any fault in this matter.”

The standoff has left residents, staff, and the union in limbo. With temperatures soaring, all parties involved are eager for a resolution. The GWU has threatened further action if the issue is not addressed promptly, while CareMalta and Active Ageing insist on their position.

As the debate rages on, the residents of Dar il-Madonna continue to bear the brunt of the heat. With no immediate solution in sight, they are left to hope that cooler days, and cooler air, are on the horizon.
