Valletta’s St. George’s Square Transforms into Foodie Heaven This Weekend

Ever wondered what makes Malta’s capital, Valletta, the UNESCO World Heritage Site it is? Sure, the Baroque architecture and rich history play a significant role. But ask any local, and they’ll tell you it’s the food that truly brings the city to life. This weekend, Valletta Local Food Festival is set to do just that, transforming St. George’s Square into a gastronomic paradise.

What to Expect?

From Friday to Sunday, over 40 food stalls will take over the square, each offering a unique taste of Malta. Think traditional Maltese cuisine like pastizzi and ftira, but also innovative twists on local favourites. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options will be aplenty, ensuring no one misses out on the fun.

But it’s not just about the food. The festival also promises live music and street entertainment, creating a vibrant atmosphere that’s perfect for both locals and tourists alike. And with the Valletta 2018 cultural programme in full swing, there’s plenty more to explore in the city.

Local Chefs in the Spotlight

This year’s festival sees a host of local chefs taking centre stage. Expect cooking demonstrations, tastings, and even the chance to learn a few tricks from the pros. Keep an eye out for Chef Marc Gatt, who’ll be whipping up a storm at his stall, Il-Busketti, and sharing his secrets in the demo tent.

Plan Your Visit

With so much on offer, it’s worth planning your visit. The festival runs from 6 pm to 11 pm on Friday, and from 10 am to 11 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entry is free, but remember to bring cash for food and drinks – while some stalls may accept cards, it’s not guaranteed.

And if you’re new to Valletta, don’t miss the opportunity to explore. Stroll along the city’s historic streets, pop into the Muża for some contemporary art, or simply soak up the atmosphere in one of the many cafes and bars.
