Easter Masses in Dubai Cancelled: Maltese Expats Disappointed

Easter Silence in Dubai: Masses Cancelled Amid War Uncertainty

In the heart of Dubai’s bustling Jumeirah Beach Residence, the usually vibrant streets around St. Mary’s Church are eerily quiet this Easter weekend. The reason? Easter masses, a staple for the city’s large expat community, have been cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the region.

War Shadows Loom Over Easter Celebrations

The decision to cancel masses was made by the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia, which oversees Catholic churches in the UAE, Oman, and Yemen. The vicariate cited safety concerns and the uncertainty caused by the war in Yemen as the primary reasons behind the cancellations.

Malta’s expat community in Dubai, numbering around 2,000, is among those affected. “I’ve been coming to Easter masses here for years,” says Maltese expat Joseph Borg, who has lived in Dubai for a decade. “It’s strange not to have that sense of community this Easter.”

Adapting to Change: Virtual Masses and Alternative Plans

While the cancellations have dampened spirits, the Maltese community has found ways to adapt. The Apostolic Vicariate has been streaming masses online, allowing expats to participate from the safety of their homes. Some have also planned alternative celebrations, like potluck dinners and family gatherings.

“We might not be able to go to church, but we can still celebrate Easter with our loved ones,” says Maltese expat Maria Azzopardi, who moved to Dubai last year. “It’s all about making the best of a difficult situation.”

Back in Malta, the news of the cancellations has been met with concern and understanding. “We’re thinking of our fellow Maltese in Dubai this Easter,” says Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna. “While we’re grateful for the safety measures taken, we share in their disappointment.”

As the war in Yemen continues, the future of Easter celebrations in Dubai remains uncertain. But for now, the Maltese expat community is finding solace in virtual masses and alternative celebrations, proving that even in the face of adversity, the spirit of Easter can still shine through.

For those interested in watching the live-streamed masses, the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia’s website (avosa.org) has the schedule and links to the streams.
