Fire Rescue: St. Julian’s Residents Saved from Balconies

Balcony Rescue: Fire Engulfs St. Julian’s Apartment Block

In the heart of Malta’s bustling St. Julian’s, a late-night fire at an apartment block left residents clinging to balconies, desperate for rescue. The blaze, which broke out around 11 pm on Tuesday, sent plumes of smoke into the night sky, visible from nearby Spinola Bay.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

The Malta Fire Rescue Service swiftly responded, deploying eight fire engines and a ladder truck to the scene. They fought the inferno from both ground and air, with a helicopter dropping water onto the flames from above. The fire, which started on the fourth floor, quickly spread to other floors, engulfing balconies and threatening residents trapped above.

“We received a call about a fire in an apartment block in St. Julian’s,” said a MFRS spokesperson. “Upon arrival, we found the building well-involved in fire, with residents trapped on balconies. Our teams immediately started rescue operations and battled the blaze.”

Residents Rescued in Dramatic Operation

In a dramatic operation, firefighters rescued residents from balconies using ladders and ropes. Some residents, too terrified to move, were coaxed to safety by firefighters. “We had to calm them down and reassure them that we were there to help,” said a firefighter at the scene.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted, “I woke up to smoke filling my apartment. I rushed to the balcony, and there were firefighters below, telling me to stay calm. It was terrifying, but they saved my life.”

Aftermath and Investigation

The fire was eventually brought under control around 2 am, with all residents accounted for and safely evacuated. No serious injuries were reported, though some residents were treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The incident has raised questions about fire safety in Malta’s densely populated urban areas. “We need to ensure our buildings are up to standard and that residents know what to do in case of a fire,” said a local councillor.

In the aftermath, residents are being assisted by the Red Cross and other volunteers. Many have been left homeless, with their belongings destroyed in the fire. A fundraiser has been set up to support them.

For now, the apartment block stands as a charred reminder of the night’s drama. But for the residents rescued from their balconies, it’s a symbol of their narrow escape and the heroes who saved them.

“I’m just grateful to be alive,” said one resident. “The firefighters were amazing. They saved our lives.”
