Gżira Vandalism: Clean-Up Underway After Spraying Spree

Gżira’s Night of Shame: Vandals Leave Trail of Graffiti

As the sun rose over the usually tranquil Grand Harbour on Sunday, the peaceful scene was marred by a stark reminder of the previous night’s activities. Gżira, a town known for its vibrant atmosphere and picturesque views, had been hit by a wave of vandalism. Graffiti tags, some crude, others more elaborate, adorned walls, shop shutters, and even traffic signs, leaving residents and business owners alike aghast at the destruction.

Gżira’s Streets: A Canvas for Vandalism

The damage was widespread, with the main thoroughfare, Triq ir-Repubblika, bearing the brunt of the vandalism. Shops along this bustling street, including the popular Il-Gżira Bakery and Café del Sol, were defaced with spray paint. The once colourful street art on the underpass leading to the ferry terminal was now overshadowed by the crude tags.

Residents woke up to find their once pristine town transformed into a chaotic display of colours. “It’s like someone came in and just decided to scribble all over our town,” said Maria, a long-time Gżira resident. “It’s disrespectful and it’s not what Gżira is about.”

Clean-Up Efforts Underway

Council workers were quick to respond, armed with buckets of water and soap, scrubbing away at the paint. However, the task was daunting, with some of the graffiti already dried and set in. “It’s going to take a lot of elbow grease to get this off,” said one worker, shaking his head.

Local councillor, Joe Borg, was seen assisting the clean-up efforts. “This is not the Gżira we know and love,” he said. “We’re doing everything we can to clean this up and restore our town to its former glory. We’re also working with the police to find those responsible.”

Police Investigation Launched

The police have launched an investigation into the incident. Superintendent Mario Cordina of the Gżira Police Station appealed for information from the public. “We believe this was the work of a group of individuals who targeted Gżira in the early hours of Sunday morning,” he said. “We’re urging anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Gżira Police Station on 2124 2000.

As the clean-up continues, Gżira residents and business owners are left to pick up the pieces, both literally and metaphorically. The question on everyone’s mind is: will this act of vandalism become a recurring theme in Gżira, or will the community come together to ensure it remains a one-off incident?

For now, the spirit of Gżira remains undeterred. As one resident put it, “They can spray their tags, but they can’t spray our spirit. We’ll clean this up and carry on.”
