Għajnsielem Welcomes the World: International Crib Convention in September
Għajnsielem’s Christmas Spirit to Go Global: International Crib Convention in September
Imagine this: the quiet, sun-kissed village of Għajnsielem, nestled in the heart of Gozo, is about to become a global hub for Christmas enthusiasts. This September, the tiny Maltese village will host the first-ever international convention dedicated to the art of creating cribs, or ‘presepji’ as we locals call them.
From Village Tradition to Global Stage
Għajnsielem, known for its traditional Gozitan architecture and the annual re-enactment of the Nativity scene, is set to welcome crib makers from across the globe. The Għajnsielem Crib Association, a local group passionate about preserving this Christmas tradition, is pulling out all the stops to make this event a resounding success.
“We’ve been preparing for this for years,” says Mario Vella, the association’s president. “We want to share our love for cribs with the world and learn from other cultures’ traditions too.”
What to Expect at the International Crib Convention
The convention, scheduled for the 16th to the 18th of September, promises a packed programme. Here’s a sneak peek:
- Exhibition: Cribs from Malta, Italy, Spain, France, and even the Philippines will be on display at the Għajnsielem Parish Centre.
- Workshops: Participants can learn new techniques and materials from master crib makers.
- Competition: A friendly competition will pit local and international cribs against each other.
- Cultural Exchange: Delegates will have the chance to explore Għajnsielem and Gozo, experiencing our unique culture and history firsthand.
Għajnsielem: A Crib Lover’s Paradise
Għajnsielem’s love affair with cribs is no secret. Every Christmas, the village transforms into a winter wonderland, with cribs of all shapes and sizes dotting its streets. The annual presepju competition is a highlight, drawing visitors from all over Malta and Gozo.
But the village’s passion for cribs isn’t just about competition. It’s about community. It’s about preserving a tradition that’s been passed down through generations. And it’s about sharing that tradition with the world.
“We’re not just hosting a convention,” says Mario. “We’re inviting the world to be a part of our Christmas tradition. And who knows? Maybe they’ll take a little bit of Għajnsielem home with them.”
