Gozo’s New Landmark: The Malta Pyramid Rises

Picture this: a colossal structure, a modern-day Stonehenge, emerging from the azure waters of the Mediterranean, just off the coast of Gozo. This isn’t a scene from a sci-fi movie, but a reality that’s slowly taking shape, thanks to the visionary project, ‘The Malta Pyramid’.

The brainchild of local architect and visionary, Joe Xuereb, ‘The Malta Pyramid’ is set to become Gozo’s newest and most iconic landmark. Situated in the picturesque Xlendi Bay, this ambitious project aims to create a unique, sustainable, and economically viable tourist attraction.

Xuereb’s concept is simple yet audacious: construct a pyramid-shaped structure, 38 meters high, using eco-friendly materials like rammed earth and recycled steel. The pyramid will house a museum, a restaurant, and a viewing platform offering panoramic views of the island and the sea.

But ‘The Malta Pyramid’ is more than just a tourist attraction. It’s a testament to Malta’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The structure is designed to be self-sufficient, harnessing solar and wind energy to power its operations.

The project also includes the creation of an artificial reef around the pyramid’s base, promoting marine life and enhancing the local ecosystem. This is a first for Malta and a significant step towards sustainable tourism.

The road to realization hasn’t been smooth. Environmental concerns, financial hurdles, and bureaucratic red tape have all posed challenges. Yet, Xuereb remains undeterred, “Every challenge is an opportunity to refine the design and make it stronger,” he says.

Xuereb has also garnered support from local authorities and the community. The Ministry for Gozo has pledged its support, and many Gozitans have embraced the project, seeing it as a symbol of progress and a boost to the island’s economy.

With construction set to begin in 2023, ‘The Malta Pyramid’ promises to be a breakthrough for Gozo. It’s not just a landmark; it’s a symbol of Malta’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and progress.
