Msida Lifts Tested: A Vertical View Before Pedestrian Bridge

Lifted Off: A Test Run of Msida’s Vertical Mobility

Ever found yourself in Msida, Malta’s bustling university town, wondering why the only way to cross the busy road is to play a real-life game of Frogger? Well, help is on the way. The government has plans to build a pedestrian bridge. But until then, we decided to test the lifts on the existing underpasses. After all, safety first, right?

Understanding Msida’s Lift Situation

Msida’s lifts are a lifeline for many. They connect the university, shops, and restaurants on one side of the road to the bus terminus and residential areas on the other. But how well do they serve their purpose? We decided to find out.

First stop, the lift at the Msida Bus Terminus. It’s a busy spot, with students rushing to catch their buses and residents heading home. The lift was clean, modern, and most importantly, functional. It whisked us up to street level in no time. A thumbs up from us!

Next, we headed to the lift near the University of Malta’s main entrance. This one was a bit older, but still in good working condition. It was also less crowded, perhaps because students prefer the nearby pedestrian crossing. We found it to be reliable and smooth, though it could use a bit of a spruce up.

Testing the Limits: Our Verdict

So, how did the lifts fare? In our tests, they performed well. They were clean, functional, and provided a safe alternative to crossing the busy road. However, we noticed that they could be a bit slow during peak hours. Also, they could use some signage to help first-time users navigate them.

We also found that while they are useful, they aren’t enough. Msida needs that pedestrian bridge. The lifts are great for those who can’t use the stairs, but they don’t solve the problem of pedestrian safety for everyone else.

: The Bridge and Beyond

The pedestrian bridge is still in the planning stages. The government has promised it will improve safety and accessibility in Msida. We can’t wait to see it. Until then, we’re glad to have the lifts. They’re not perfect, but they’re a step in the right direction.

So, the next time you’re in Msida, give the lifts a try. They’re not just for those who need them. They’re a safe, convenient way to cross the road. And who knows, you might even enjoy the view!
