Gozo Modellers’ Miniature Masterpieces on Display
Miniature Marvels: Gozo Scale Modellers Club Unveils Masterpieces
Imagine standing face to face with a Spitfire, its engine roaring, ready for takeoff. Now imagine it’s smaller than your hand. This is the magic of scale modelling, and it’s on full display at the Gozo Scale Modellers Club exhibition.
A Passion for Precision
The Gozo Scale Modellers Club, nestled in the heart of Victoria, Gozo’s capital city, is a haven for hobbyists who turn their passion into painstakingly detailed replicas. The club, founded in 2011, has been quietly honing its members’ skills, and this year’s exhibition is a testament to their dedication.
Walk into the exhibition space at the Citadel’s Old Prison, and you’re greeted by a feast for the eyes. From World War II aircraft to intricate cars, ships, and even a life-sized Maltese traditional boat, each model is a labour of love, a testament to the modeller’s patience and skill.
The Art of Patience
Meet Joe Borg, the club’s secretary and a seasoned modeller. He’s been at it for over 40 years. “It’s not just about gluing parts together,” he says, “It’s about understanding the subject, the history, the mechanics. It’s about capturing the essence of the original in miniature.”
Joe’s current project, a 1:72 scale Messerschmitt Bf 109, has taken him over a year. “I spend hours every week, sometimes just painting tiny parts,” he says, holding up a brush thinner than a human hair. “But when you see the finished product, it’s all worth it.”
More Than Just Models
The exhibition is more than just a display of craftsmanship. It’s a journey through history, a celebration of engineering, and a testament to human ingenuity. It’s also a community event, with visitors of all ages marvelling at the detail and chatting with the modellers.
Club president Mario Azzopardi hopes the exhibition will inspire others to take up the hobby. “It’s not just about the models,” he says, “It’s about the sense of community, the shared passion, the learning. We’d love to see more people join us.”
So, if you find yourself in Gozo, don’t miss this hidden gem. The Gozo Scale Modellers Club exhibition runs until the end of March at the Old Prison, Victoria. Entry is free, and it’s a treat for both history buffs and those who appreciate the art of patience.
