It was a chilly January evening in Msida, and the usual hum of activity around the basketball courts was noticeably absent. The reason? One of Malta’s rising basketball stars, 22-year-old Matthew Camilleri, had vanished without a trace three days prior, leaving the local sports community in shock and the police scrambling for answers.

Matthew, a power forward for the Msida Basketball Club, was last seen leaving his family home in Birkirkara on Monday evening, January 17. His parents reported him missing the following day when he didn’t return home or respond to calls. His phone was found abandoned near the Msida Marina, sparking concerns that something sinister might have occurred.

The Malta Police Force swiftly launched an investigation, combing through CCTV footage from the area and interviewing Matthew’s friends, family, and teammates. Superintendent Joseph Muscat, leading the investigation, told Hot Malta, “We’re treating this as a high-priority case. Matthew’s disappearance is out of character, and we’re exploring all possibilities.”

Divers have searched the waters around the marina, while officers have been conducting door-to-door inquiries in the nearby residential areas. The police have also appealed to the public for any information that might help locate Matthew.

Msida, a small community known for its strong sense of togetherness, has been left reeling by Matthew’s disappearance. His teammates and friends have been holding vigils at the Msida Sports Complex, praying for his safe return. “Matthew is more than just a player,” said club captain, Daniel Azzopardi. “He’s our brother, and we won’t stop searching until he’s back home.”

Matthew’s disappearance has also through Malta’s basketball community. The Malta Basketball Association has offered its full support to the investigation and has encouraged anyone with information to come forward.

As the search for Matthew enters its fourth day, speculation is rife among the public. Some suspect foul play, while others hope that he might have simply needed some time away. However, his family and friends remain adamant that something more serious has occurred.

“Matthew would never just disappear like this,” said his mother, Maria Camilleri. “He loves his family, his teammates, and his sport. We need to find him, and we won’t give up until we do.”
