Malta Police Force Band to Premiere Oratorio Inspired by Pope Francis’ Words
Imagine this: the grand hall of the Mediterranean Conference Centre, filled with the expectant hum of an audience, as the Malta Police Force Band takes their seats, instruments gleaming under the stage lights. This isn’t your average concert, though. The band is about to premiere an original musical oratorio, inspired by the words of none other than Pope Francis himself.
From Papal Encyclicals to Musical Notes
The brainchild of local composer and musical director, Ray Sciberras, this unique musical piece, titled “Laudato Si'”, is derived from Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical of the same name. The encyclical, which calls for urgent action on climate change and environmental degradation, has inspired Sciberras to create a musical journey that echoes its themes of hope, responsibility, and unity.
“I wanted to translate the powerful messages of ‘Laudato Si” into a musical language that everyone can understand and appreciate,” Sciberras explains. “The Pope’s words are so profound and timely, they deserve to be shared in this way.”
Malta’s Finest in Uniform, Playing for a Cause
The Malta Police Force Band, led by Inspector Keith Mercieca, will be bringing Sciberras’ composition to life. Comprising over 40 musicians, the band is no stranger to performing at high-profile events, but this one holds a special significance.
“We’re thrilled to be part of this project,” Mercieca says. “It’s not every day that we get to perform music that carries such a meaningful message. We hope our audience will be moved by the power of both the music and the Pope’s words.”
More Than Just a Concert: A Call to Action
The premiere of “Laudato Si”” is more than just a musical event. It’s a call to action, a reminder of our collective responsibility towards our planet. The Mediterranean Conference Centre, where the concert will take place, is itself a symbol of Malta’s commitment to sustainability, having won the prestigious Europa Nostra Award for its restoration and adaptive reuse.
The concert will also coincide with the launch of a local environmental initiative, further underscoring its commitment to the themes of the encyclical. “We want to use the power of music to start conversations, to inspire people to take action,” Sciberras says.
So, mark your calendars for the 20th of October. The Mediterranean Conference Centre will echo with the sounds of “Laudato Si””, a musical testament to our shared responsibility towards our planet. And who knows? You might just find yourself humming the tune as you leave, carrying with you a renewed sense of purpose.
