Malta’s Big Safety Boost: Fire Blankets & Guides for Every Home

Safety First: Fire Blankets and Prevention Guides Headed to Every Maltese Home

Imagine this: you’re cooking dinner at your Strait Street apartment. Suddenly, the oil in your pan catches fire. What do you do? If you’re like most Maltese, you might not have a clear answer. But help is on the way, literally.

In an effort to boost safety awareness and preparedness across the country, the Civil Protection Department (CPD) has announced a nationwide distribution of fire blankets and accident prevention booklets. This initiative, a first of its kind, aims to equip every Maltese household with the tools and knowledge to tackle common hazards.

Fire Blankets: A New Weapon in the Kitchen

Fire blankets, a compact, lightweight safety device, can smother flames in seconds. They’re perfect for kitchen fires, electrical fires, and even burning clothing. Yet, many Maltese homes don’t have one. The CPD is changing that, distributing 100,000 fire blankets across Malta and Gozo.

“We want every household to be prepared,” says CPD Director, Martin Portelli. “Fire blankets are easy to use and can make a huge difference in a fire emergency.”

Accident Prevention: Knowledge is Power

But fire safety is just one aspect of the CPD’s campaign. They’re also distributing 200,000 accident prevention booklets, packed with practical tips and safety guidelines. From first aid to home safety, these booklets are designed to empower Maltese residents to prevent accidents before they happen.

“Accidents happen, but many can be prevented with the right knowledge and precautions,” says Portelli. “Our booklets provide that knowledge, making our homes and streets safer for everyone.”

When and Where to Expect Your Safety Pack

So, when can you expect your safety pack? The CPD is working with local councils to deliver the fire blankets and booklets directly to households. Distribution is set to begin next month and should be completed by the end of the year.

“We’re asking everyone to be patient,” says Portelli. “We want to ensure every household receives their pack, so it might take some time. But it’s worth it to keep Malta safe.”

In the meantime, the CPD encourages residents to familiarize themselves with basic safety measures. “Knowledge is power,” says Portelli. “The more we know about safety, the safer we all are.”

So, the next time you’re cooking up a storm in your Strait Street kitchen, remember: safety is just a fire blanket away. And soon, it’ll be right there in your home.
