Tragedy on Triq il-Kbira: Family Mourns Cement Mixer Victim

Triq il-Kbira, Qormi’s bustling main street, was a scene of chaos and grief yesterday as a cement mixer plowed into a crowd, leaving one person dead and several injured. The victim, identified as 55-year-old Joseph Xuereb, was a well-known figure in the local community, known for his warm smile and kind heart.

Remembering Joseph Xuereb

Joseph Xuereb was more than just a face in the crowd. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a friend to many. His family has paid tribute to him, describing him as a man who ‘loved life and lived it to the fullest.’

“Our hearts are broken,” said his daughter, Maria Xuereb. “We’ve lost a piece of ourselves, but we take comfort in knowing that Dad is now at peace.”

The Accident

The accident occurred around noon, when a cement mixer, reportedly traveling at high speed, lost control and veered onto the pavement. Witnesses described the scene as ‘horrific,’ with people screaming and running for their lives.

The driver of the cement mixer, a 32-year-old man from Birkirkara, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. He has since been released on police bail pending further investigations.

Community in Mourning

Qormi, like many Maltese towns, is a tight-knit community. News of Joseph’s death has through the town, with many taking to social media to express their condolences and share their memories of him.

Father Mark Xuereb, the parish priest of Qormi, led a prayer vigil last night, calling for unity and strength in the face of tragedy. “Joseph was one of us,” he said. “He was a son of Qormi, and his loss is a loss for all of us.”

In the coming days, the community is expected to come together to support the Xuereb family. A book of condolences has been opened at the Qormi Parish Church, and a memorial service is planned for this weekend.

As the investigation into the accident continues, the Xuereb family has asked for privacy. “We appreciate the outpouring of love and support,” said Maria Xuereb. “But right now, we just need time to grieve and come to terms with our loss.”
