Beyond the Prison Gates: RISe Foundation’s Radical Vision for Rehabilitation

Imagine walking through the heavy, iron gates of Corradino Correctional Facility, leaving behind the towering walls and the echoes of locked doors. Now imagine, instead of the usual sense of relief, feeling a pang of unease for the individuals left behind. This is the reality that RISe Foundation, a local NGO, is challenging, with a radical vision for rehabilitation that’s turning heads in Malta’s criminal justice system.

Breaking Down Barriers, Building Futures

RISe Foundation, established in 2019, is a breath of fresh air in Malta’s rehabilitation scene. Their approach is simple yet powerful: treat prisoners as individuals, not just inmates. “We believe that everyone deserves a second chance,” says Dr. Maria Pisani, the foundation’s director. “Our goal is to help prisoners reintegrate into society, not just to serve their time and be released.”

RISe operates from within Corradino, offering a range of services from education and vocational training to psychological support and family reunification. They’ve transformed a once-dreary space into a vibrant hub of learning and growth, complete with a library, classrooms, and even a small garden tended to by the inmates themselves.

From Cells to Classrooms: Education as Empowerment

Education is at the heart of RISe’s approach. They offer courses ranging from basic literacy and numeracy to advanced subjects like psychology and law. The foundation has partnered with local universities and colleges to provide accredited courses, giving inmates the chance to earn qualifications while behind bars.

One such inmate is Mario* (not his real name), who’s been studying law with RISe’s support. “I never thought I’d have the chance to learn again,” he says, “But RISe has given me that opportunity. It’s not just about the qualifications, it’s about feeling like I’m worth something again.”

Community Engagement: More Than Just a Sentence

RISe doesn’t stop at the prison gates. They engage with communities, working with local councils, NGOs, and businesses to create a support network for ex-offenders. Their ‘Through the Gates’ program, for instance, pairs inmates with mentors from outside who support them through their release and reintegration.

In Valletta, RISe has partnered with local businesses to create job opportunities for ex-offenders. “We’re not just helping individuals,” says Dr. Pisani, “We’re helping to create a more cohesive, inclusive society.”

RISe’s work is gaining recognition. In 2021, they were awarded the European Commission’s Civil Society Prize for their innovative approach to rehabilitation. Yet, they remain humble, focused on the individuals they serve.

As Mario prepares for his release, he reflects on his journey with RISe. “They’ve shown me that I can have a future, that I can be more than just a criminal. That’s what rehabilitation is about, isn’t it? It’s about breaking down barriers, not just building them.”

RISe Foundation is more than just an NGO; it’s a beacon of hope in Malta’s criminal justice system. Their radical vision for rehabilitation is not just changing lives, it’s changing perceptions. And that’s a future worth fighting for.
