Bag Snatch: Driver’s Shock as Thief Strikes in Broad Daylight

Imagine this: You’re parked at the bustling Triq il-Mediterran in Sliema, window down, enjoying the Mediterranean breeze. Suddenly, a shadow darts past, and before you can react, your bag’s gone. This was the reality for a local motorist last week, as a brazen thief struck in broad daylight.

Caught Off Guard

The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, had just parked his car outside the popular Tico Tico café when the thief struck. He had left his bag on the passenger seat, containing his wallet, phone, and other valuables. “I was just sitting there, enjoying the view,” he recalls, “Next thing I know, my bag’s gone, and this guy’s running off.”

Witnesses Describe the Scene

Several witnesses saw the incident unfold. “It happened so fast,” said one eyewitness, “The guy just leaned in, grabbed the bag, and ran off. The driver was still trying to figure out what had happened.” Another witness described the thief as a young man, wearing a hoodie and jeans, who fled towards the Sliema Ferries.

Police on the Case

The victim immediately reported the incident to the Sliema Police Station. Inspector Joseph Camilleri confirmed that they are treating the case seriously. “We’re reviewing CCTV footage from the area and appealing to anyone who might have seen something to come forward,” he said.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that even in busy, seemingly safe areas like Sliema, crime can happen. The police urge motorists to keep valuables out of sight and never leave them unattended in their cars.

As for the victim, he’s just glad he wasn’t hurt. “It’s just stuff,” he says, “I’m more relieved it wasn’t worse. But it’s a reminder to always be vigilant, no matter where you are.”

So, the next time you’re enjoying the view at Triq il-Mediterran, remember to keep your valuables safe. Because in Malta’s busy streets, a moment’s distraction can lead to a costly lesson.
