EU’s New Travel Pass: Malta’s 18+ Can Explore for Free

Unlocking the World: EU’s New Travel Pass for Malta’s 18+

Imagine this: You’re 18, fresh out of school, and eager to explore the world. But your wallet’s thin, and so are your travel options. Well, buckle up, because the EU just threw you a lifeline. Introducing the new EU travel pass, a free ticket to discover our continent. Let’s dive into what this means for Malta’s young adventurers.

What’s the Deal?

The EU has launched a new initiative, offering 18-year-olds a free travel pass. Dubbed the ‘DiscoverEU’ scheme, it’s designed to encourage young people to explore their continent, fostering a sense of European belonging. The pass provides free travel on trains, buses, and ferries across 33 European countries, including our very own Malta.

But here’s the catch. The scheme is only open to 18-year-olds who turn that age during the year of application. So, if you’re a Maltese teen celebrating your 18th birthday in 2023, you’re in luck!

How to Apply

Applications for the DiscoverEU scheme open on April 26, 2023, and close on May 10, 2023. To apply, you’ll need to complete an online quiz on the European Youth Portal. It’s not about cramming facts; it’s more about understanding what it means to be European. Once you’ve passed the quiz, you’re in the draw to win one of the 60,000 travel passes up for grabs.

If you’re selected, you’ll have until October 31, 2023, to plan and book your journey. The pass covers up to five days of travel, so you could spend a week exploring, or split your time between a few destinations.

Malta: The Perfect Starting Point

Why not start your European adventure right here in Malta? Our tiny island is packed with history, culture, and natural beauty. From the ancient megalithic temples in Mnajdra to the vibrant streets of Valletta, there’s plenty to explore. Plus, with the pass covering travel to and from Malta, you can use your five days to discover our neighbors too. Sicily’s just a ferry ride away, and with a bit of planning, you could even reach Greece or Spain.

So, Malta’s 18-year-olds, the world’s your oyster. Whether you’re dreaming of exploring ancient ruins, partying in Ibiza, or just want to see what’s beyond our shores, the EU’s new travel pass could be your ticket. Mark your calendars, get ready to learn, and who knows? You might just win your way to an adventure of a lifetime.
