Man Gets 30 Months for Setting Neighbour’s Flat on Fire

Blaze of Retribution: 30 Months for Man Who Torched Neighbour’s Flat

It was a scene straight out of a nightmare. The once-quiet street of Triq San Ġużepp in Msida was ablaze with an inferno that engulfed an entire apartment block. Neighbours watched in horror as flames licked the walls, smoke billowing into the night sky. The cause? A deliberate act of arson, as a disgruntled man sought retribution against his neighbour.

Yesterday, the courts handed down a sentence that echoed the severity of the crime. The man, identified as 45-year-old Joseph Xuereb, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for setting fire to his neighbour’s flat. The blaze not only destroyed the victim’s home but also caused significant damage to other apartments in the block.

The Spark of Discord

Tensions between Xuereb and his neighbour, 52-year-old Maria Azzopardi, had been simmering for months. The dispute, over a trivial matter of parking, escalated into a full-blown feud. Xuereb, unable to let go of his grudge, decided to take matters into his own hands in the most devastating way.

On the fateful night of 14th June 2021, Xuereb poured accelerant through the letterbox of Azzopardi’s flat and set it alight. The fire spread rapidly, engulfing the wooden door and staircase, before consuming Azzopardi’s home. She managed to escape with her life, but her belongings were reduced to ashes.

Justice Served, Lives Shattered

Xuereb’s actions didn’t just destroy Azzopardi’s home; they also displaced several other families who lived in the block. The fire caused extensive damage, with some residents losing their homes and all their possessions. The cost of repairs ran into tens of thousands of euros.

In court, Xuereb showed no remorse for his actions. He admitted to starting the fire but claimed he hadn’t intended for it to spread. The judge, however, was unforgiving. “Your actions were reckless and dangerous,” he said, “You put lives at risk and caused immense damage. This sentence should serve as a deterrent to others.”

For Azzopardi, the sentence brings a measure of justice but little comfort. “My home was more than just bricks and mortar,” she said, “It was my sanctuary, my refuge. Now, it’s gone, and I’m left with nothing but memories and ashes.”

Preventing Future Flames

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of petty disputes left to fester. It’s a call to action for all of us to resolve our differences peacefully, before they escalate into something far more dangerous.

In the meantime, the residents of Triq San Ġużepp are picking up the pieces, rebuilding their homes, and their lives. They’re a testament to the resilience of the Maltese spirit, which refuses to be extinguished by the flames of hatred and malice.
