Pedestrian Struck in Żabbar: A Call for Safer Streets

Pedestrian Struck in Żabbar: A Reminder to Prioritize Safety on Our Streets

It was a chilly Tuesday evening in Żabbar, a quiet residential town in the southeastern part of Malta. The sun had begun to set, casting an orange glow over the narrow, winding streets. At around 7:30 PM, a sudden, jarring sound echoed through Triq San Girgor, a sound that would leave one man fighting for his life and a community shaken.

An Accident that Shattered Silence

A 54-year-old pedestrian was crossing the road when he was struck by a car. The impact was severe, leaving the man with grievous injuries. The Żabbar Police and an ambulance were promptly called, and the man was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the car, a 32-year-old man from Żabbar, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. The car was impounded, and investigations are ongoing. The Żabbar Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Safety Concerns in Żabbar

This incident has once again brought to light the safety concerns of pedestrians in Malta’s towns. Żabbar, like many other towns, is a mix of old and new architecture, with narrow streets that were not designed for the volume and speed of modern traffic. Residents have long been calling for better pedestrian crossings and traffic calming measures.

In fact, just last year, the Żabbar Local Council proposed a project to improve pedestrian safety in the town. The project, which includes the installation of pedestrian crossings and the reduction of speed limits, is still awaiting approval from higher authorities.

What Can We Do?

While we wait for infrastructure improvements, there are steps we can take to improve safety on our streets. As drivers, we must remember that speed limits are there to protect lives, not to be tested. As pedestrians, we must cross at designated crossings and use pedestrian signals where available.

Let’s not wait for another accident to happen. Let’s make our streets safer, together. Let’s prioritize human life over speed and convenience.

As Żabbar resident and community activist, Joe Xuereb, puts it, “Żabbar is our home. We need to look out for each other. We need to make sure that our streets are safe for everyone, especially our elderly and our children.”

Let’s make Żabbar, and Malta, a safer place for all.
