Malta’s Solar Power Grants: Bigger Projects Invited

Sun’s Up, Cash is Out: Larger Solar Projects Invited to Bid for Grants

Picture this: the sun beats down on the rooftops of Birkirkara, one of Malta’s most densely populated towns. Yet, despite the island’s abundance of sunshine, harnessing solar power has been a challenge for larger projects. Until now.

In a move that’s sure to make solar energy enthusiasts rejoice, the government has relaunched its solar power grant scheme, this time opening its doors to larger projects. This isn’t just about greening our energy mix; it’s about creating a sustainable future for our children and boosting our economy.

From Rooftops to Fields: Bigger Projects Welcome

Remember the days when solar grants were only for rooftop installations? Those days are gone. The new scheme, administered by the Malta Resources Authority, is inviting bids for larger ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) projects. We’re talking about installations that can generate up to 2 megawatts of power, a significant leap from the previous limit of 100 kilowatts.

This means we could soon see solar farms springing up across Malta, turning underutilized land into powerhouses. Imagine walking along the Marsaxlokk coast and seeing a solar field instead of an empty plot. It’s not just a possibility; it’s a probability.

Cash Incentives and More: What’s on Offer?

The grant scheme is offering a 50% co-financing rate for eligible projects. That’s right, you read it correctly. If your project costs €2 million, the government will chip in €1 million. But that’s not all. Successful applicants will also benefit from a 20-year feed-in tariff, ensuring a steady return on investment.

But here’s the catch. The total budget for this scheme is €10 million. Once that’s gone, it’s gone. So, if you’ve got a large-scale solar project in mind, you’ll need to act fast.

“This is an exciting time for Malta’s renewable energy sector,” said Dr. Joseph Gauci, a local renewable energy expert. “We have the sun, we have the technology, and now we have the incentives. Let’s make the most of it.”

How to Apply and What’s Next?

Interested parties can submit their expressions of interest until the 31st of August. The MRA will then shortlist applicants and invite them to submit full applications. The successful projects will be announced by the end of the year.

So, if you’ve been thinking about a large-scale solar project, now’s the time to act. Let’s turn Malta into a solar powerhouse, one panel at a time.
