Malta’s Different Light Set to Release Debut Album
Malta’s Own Different Light Set to Illuminate the Music Scene with New Album
Imagine this: the sun dipping below the horizon at Marsaxlokk, the sea turning into a canvas of oranges and reds, and the first notes of a guitar echoing through the warm evening air. This is the scene that comes to mind when we think about Different Light, Malta’s very own indie-rock band, and their upcoming album.
From Street Performances to Studio Recordings
Different Light, a five-piece band hailing from the bustling streets of Valletta, has been a staple of Malta’s local music scene for the past decade. From busking at the Three Cities to headlining gigs at the annual Isle of MTV, their raw energy and captivating melodies have earned them a loyal following. Now, they’re ready to take their music to the next level with their debut album, ‘Neon Nocturnes’.
“We’ve spent years honing our sound on the streets of Malta,” says lead singer and guitarist, Marc Calleja. “From the markets of Mdina to the clubs of Paceville, every performance has shaped who we are as a band. Now, we’re excited to capture that energy in the studio and share it with the world.”
Crafting ‘Neon Nocturnes’ in the Heart of Malta
The band has been working tirelessly on ‘Neon Nocturnes’ at their studio in Birkirkara, a space they’ve transformed into a creative hub. Here, they’ve been pouring their hearts into each track, drawing inspiration from their Maltese surroundings and the vibrant local culture.
“Malta’s unique blend of influences – from its Mediterranean heritage to its British colonial past – has always inspired our music,” explains keyboardist and backing vocalist, Maria Grech. “We wanted to capture that in ‘Neon Nocturnes’, to create an album that’s truly Maltese, yet universal in its appeal.”
What to Expect from ‘Neon Nocturnes’
‘Neon Nocturnes’ promises to be a captivating journey through Different Light’s signature indie-rock sound, with hints of folk, pop, and even electronic influences. The album explores themes of love, loss, and the human condition, all wrapped up in the band’s signature storytelling style.
“We’ve always been about telling stories through our music,” says Calleja. “Whether it’s a love song inspired by a sunset at Golden Bay, or a protest song about the struggles of everyday life in Malta, every track on ‘Neon Nocturnes’ has a story to tell.”
The first single from the album, ‘St. Julian’s Sunset’, is set to drop later this month. The track, a nostalgic ode to the island’s coastal town, is a perfect introduction to the album’s rich mix sounds and emotions.
: Tours, Festivals, and More
With the album set to release in early 2023, Different Light has big plans for the coming year. They’re already booked for several local festivals, including the annual Isle of MTV and the Malta Jazz Festival, and they’re hoping to take their music on the road with a European tour.
“We can’t wait to bring ‘Neon Nocturnes’ to the world,” says Grech. “Whether it’s playing to a packed crowd in Berlin or busking on the streets of Rome, we’re ready to share our music with anyone who’ll listen.”
And what about the local scene? Different Light is eager to continue supporting and collaborating with other Maltese musicians. “Malta has such a rich musical heritage, and we’re proud to be a part of that,” says Calleja. “We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Maltese music.”
So, as the sun sets over Marsaxlokk and the first notes of ‘St. Julian’s Sunset’ ring out, remember the name Different Light. They’re about to illuminate the music scene, one neon nocturne at a time.
