From Rabat to Rome: The First Leap
Joseph’s journey began in the heart of Malta’s historic center. Born and raised in Rabat, he was no stranger to the ancient city’s charm. Yet, as a teenager, he yearned for more. In 1990, with his parents’ blessing and a one-way ticket, he set off for Rome, seeking better educational opportunities.
“Leaving Malta was tough,” Joseph recalls, “but I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone to grow.”
The California Dream
After completing his studies in Italy, Joseph’s sights were set on the United States. In 1995, he arrived in San Francisco with just $500 in his pocket. He worked odd jobs, from washing dishes to selling flowers at Fisherman’s Wharf, all the while honing his tech skills at night school.
His big break came in 1999 when he co-founded GreenThumb Software, a pioneering mobile app development company. The startup took off, attracting investors and catapulting Joseph into the ranks of Silicon Valley’s elite.
“I remember walking down Market Street, seeing the city’s potential, and dreaming of being part of its tech revolution,” Joseph says. “Little did I know, I’d be helping shape it.”
Giving Back to Malta
Today, Joseph is a millionaire many times over, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots. He’s invested heavily in Maltese startups, creating jobs and fostering innovation. His company, Attard Technologies, now employs over 50 people in Malta and California.
“Malta gave me the foundation I needed to succeed,” Joseph says. “Now, it’s my turn to give back. I want to help create opportunities for the next generation of Maltese entrepreneurs.”
