64-year-old Hospitalised After Gozo Crash: What We Know So Far
Emergency services rushed to the scene of a serious road accident in Gozo yesterday, where a 64-year-old man was left with critical injuries. The incident, which occurred on the Qala-Xagħra road, has once again highlighted the pressing issue of road safety on the sister island.
What Happened?
The crash, involving a car and a motorcycle, took place around 1:30 PM near the Qala viewpoint. The 64-year-old man, a resident of Xagħra, was riding his motorcycle when he collided with a car driven by a 32-year-old man from Żebbuġ. The elderly man was thrown from his bike and sustained severe injuries, including a head trauma.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the man lying unconscious on the road as emergency services arrived. He was immediately taken to Gozo General Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Road Safety Concerns in Gozo
This incident has reignited concerns about road safety in Gozo, with many residents calling for stricter enforcement and improved road infrastructure. According to statistics from the Malta Police Force, there were 119 road accidents in Gozo in 2021, resulting in 189 casualties.
Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri has acknowledged the issue, stating, “Road safety is a priority for our government. We are working on improving road infrastructure and increasing enforcement, but we also need the cooperation of drivers.”
Support Pouring In for the Victim
News of the crash has sparked an outpouring of support for the victim and his family. Neighbours and friends have been visiting the hospital, offering their support and well-wishes. A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help with the victim’s medical expenses.
One of the victim’s neighbours, Maria Grech, told Hot Malta, “We’re all praying for him. He’s a lovely man, always ready to help. We hope he makes a full recovery.”
