International Lawyer Brings Human Rights to Malta

Human Rights in the Spotlight: International Lawyer Heads to Malta

Imagine standing in the heart of Valletta, the sun casting its warm glow on the Grandmaster’s Palace. Now, picture this: later this month, an international human rights lawyer will be standing there too, not as a tourist, but to inspire and inform. Dr. Agnes Callamard, the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, is coming to Malta. But why should you care?

Why Dr. Callamard’s Visit Matters

Malta, a small island nation, might seem far from the global human rights stage. But it’s not. We’re part of the international community, and our actions, or inactions, have ripple effects. Dr. Callamard’s visit is a chance for us to engage with pressing global issues, right here at home.

Her work focuses on extrajudicial killings, a chilling term that’s all too familiar in today’s world. From journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder to the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, Dr. Callamard’s investigations have shed light on some of the darkest corners of our world. Her insights could not be more timely or relevant.

What’s on the Agenda?

Dr. Callamard will be speaking at the University of Malta on the 23rd of February. Her talk, titled “Protecting Human Rights in the Age of Impunity”, promises to be a hard-hitting exploration of the challenges we face in upholding human rights worldwide. But it’s not just a lecture. It’s a call to action.

She’ll be joined by local human rights advocates, offering a chance for Maltese voices to be heard. It’s an opportunity for us to discuss our own human rights record, our role in the international community, and what we can do to make a difference.

But here’s the thing: you don’t need to be a human rights expert to attend. You just need to care. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or a concerned citizen, this is your chance to engage with some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Getting Involved

So, how can you get involved? The event is free and open to the public. It’s being held at the University of Malta’s Aula Magna, starting at 6 pm. If you can’t make it, follow us on social media for updates and join the conversation online using the hashtag #HumanRightsMalta.

Remember, human rights are not someone else’s problem. They’re ours. They’re about our neighbours, our communities, our world. And they start right here, in Malta.

Dr. Callamard’s visit is a wake-up call. It’s a chance to stand up, to speak out, and to make a difference. So, will you be there?
