Malta Police Hunt Poisoned HiPP Baby Food Extortionists
Poison Plot: Police Hunt for Tampered HiPP Baby Food in Malta
Imagine the horror of a parent discovering their baby’s food has been tampered with. This isn’t a scene from a Hollywood thriller, but a chilling reality unfolding right here in Malta. Police are on the hunt for a sinister extortion scheme involving poisoned HiPP baby food, sending shockwaves through our close-knit communities.
Tainted Tins Found in Local Supermarkets
It started with a disturbing discovery at a supermarket in Msida. A vigilant employee noticed something amiss with a batch of HiPP organic baby food tins. Upon closer inspection, they found the tamper-evident seals had been compromised, and the contents tested positive for an unknown substance. Police were swiftly alerted, and a full-scale investigation launched.
Since then, similar tins have been found in supermarkets across Malta and Gozo, including in popular shopping districts like Republic Street in Valletta and Triq San Gwann in St. Julian’s. Authorities are urging parents to check their baby food supplies and report any suspicious tins immediately.
Extortion Attempts Uncovered
As police look into the case, they’ve uncovered a sinister motive behind the tampering. Anonymous notes have been found demanding ransom payments from HiPP Malta in exchange for the safe return of the tampered tins. The notes, written in both Maltese and English, threaten to release the poisoned tins into the market if their demands are not met.
HiPP Malta has confirmed receipt of these extortion attempts but reassured parents that they are working closely with the police to ensure the safety of their customers. They have also issued a recall of the affected batches and are offering full refunds to parents who purchased the tins.
Police Appeal for Information
In a press conference held outside the Floriana Police Station, Inspector Joseph Muscat appealed to the public for any information that could help apprehend the culprits. “We believe that the person or persons responsible for this heinous act are part of our community. If you have seen anything suspicious, or know someone who has recently acquired a large amount of HiPP baby food tins, please come forward.”
Hotlines have been set up at all police stations across Malta and Gozo, and a dedicated email address has been established for anyone with information to come forward anonymously: info@hippfoodsafety.mt.
In the meantime, parents are advised to be extra vigilant when purchasing baby food. Always check the tamper-evident seals, and if you suspect a tin has been tampered with, do not open it. Instead, contact the police immediately.
This is a developing story. Hot Malta will continue to provide updates as more information comes to light. Stay safe, Malta. Let’s look out for one another and bring these criminals to justice.
