Malta’s Urban Evolution Hits Tashkent

Malta’s Urban Evolution: Snapshots from Valletta to Tashkent

Imagine this: a bustling street in Valletta, the sun casting long shadows, a cat darting between ancient stone walls. Now, picture that scene, captured by a local photographer, on display in the heart of Uzbekistan. This isn’t a dream, but a reality thanks to Malta’s participation in the ‘Urban Chronicles’ exhibition in Tashkent.

Capturing Change: Malta’s Urban Evolution

Malta’s urban scene has evolved dramatically over the years, from the grand Baroque architecture of Valletta to the modern high-rises of Birkirkara. This transformation is not just physical but also cultural, reflecting the island’s shifting identity. Photographer Mario Ellul, a regular at the Three Cities’ street markets, has been documenting this change. His work, along with that of other Maltese photographers, is now gracing the walls of the Tashkent House of Photography.

“It’s surreal to think my photos, taken right here in Malta, are being seen halfway across the world,” says Ellul. His black-and-white series, ‘Valletta: Before the Crowds’, captures the silent beauty of Malta’s capital before the tourist influx. “It’s a reminder of how much our cities have changed, and how quickly,” he adds.

Malta Meets Uzbekistan: A Cultural Exchange

The ‘Urban Chronicles’ exhibition is more than just a showcase of Malta’s urban evolution. It’s a cultural exchange, a dialogue between two distant yet interconnected worlds. Curated by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, the exhibition features works by Maltese photographers alongside those from Tashkent.

Malta’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Marthese Portelli, sees this as an opportunity to foster cultural ties. “Exhibitions like these help us understand each other’s cultures better,” she says. “They show that, despite our geographical distance, we share common experiences and perspectives.”

From Strait Street to Tashkent: A Local’s Perspective

For many Maltese, the exhibition offers a unique perspective on their own urban scene. It’s a chance to see familiar streets and buildings through a new lens, to appreciate the beauty in the everyday. It’s also a reminder of how Malta’s urban evolution is part of a global trend, with cities around the world grappling with similar challenges and changes.

Back in Malta, Ellul is already planning his next series. “I want to capture the changes happening right now,” he says. “The new developments, the old buildings being restored, the people who call these streets home. It’s a living, breathing story, and I want to tell it.”
