Woman Hospitalized After St Julian’s Truck Incident

Truck vs. Pedestrian: St Julian’s Incident Leaves Woman Hospitalized

As the sun dipped below the horizon on Tuesday evening, a chilling scene unfolded in the bustling streets of St Julian’s. A woman, later identified as 45-year-old Maria, was struck by a truck while crossing the busy Triq San Giljan, leaving her hospitalized with serious injuries.

Witnesses Recall Chaotic Scene

Eyewitnesses described the incident as a “horrific” and “chaotic” scene. “I was walking my dog nearby when I heard a loud thud,” said local resident, Lisa. “I turned around and saw the woman lying on the road, the truck stopped a few meters away. It was terrifying.”

The incident occurred around 7:30 PM, a time when the street is usually packed with locals and tourists alike, heading to nearby restaurants and bars. The truck, a large white Mercedes, was reportedly making a left turn from Triq San Giljan onto Triq Il-Kappillan Sant in the direction of Paceville.

Emergency Services Respond

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle from the Malta Police Force arriving within minutes. Maria was immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where she remains in stable but serious condition.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the driver of the truck cooperating fully. “We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information to come forward,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Police Force.

St Julian’s Residents Call for Safety Improvements

This is not the first pedestrian-related incident in St Julian’s, and locals are calling for urgent safety improvements. “We’ve been saying this for years,” said long-time resident, Tony. “The roads here are too narrow, and there’s not enough space for both vehicles and pedestrians.”

St Julian’s Mayor, Gino De Winton, echoed these sentiments, stating, “We are committed to improving pedestrian safety in our town. We will be working closely with the relevant authorities to explore potential solutions, such as pedestrian crossings and traffic calming measures.”

In the meantime, residents are urging caution, especially during peak evening hours. “Please, everyone, be careful when crossing the streets,” said Lisa. “We don’t want to see another incident like this happen again.”

As the investigation into the incident continues, our thoughts are with Maria and her family. We wish her a speedy recovery.
