Beyond March: Malta’s Women in Music – A New Harmony

Imagine this: a packed St. John’s Cavalier in Valletta, the air electric with anticipation. The stage is set, but it’s not the usual lineup of male musicians that takes centre stage. Tonight, it’s all about the women. This is not a distant dream, but a reality we’re fast approaching in Malta’s vibrant music scene.

Marching Beyond: The Global Context

March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate achievements and acknowledge inequalities. In the music industry, the gender gap is stark. Women make up just 21% of music producers and 3% of audio engineers, according to a Women’s Audio Mission report. But change is brewing, and Malta’s women in music are at the forefront.

Malta’s Melodious Revolution

Meet Ann Klint, a Malta-based DJ and producer who’s been shattering stereotypes since she started spinning records in 2011. “I’ve played in clubs where I was the only woman DJ,” she says, “but things are changing. I see more women in the scene now, and that’s exciting.”

Ann is not alone. Women like Karin Azad, a techno DJ and promoter, and Laura Pace, a singer-songwriter, are making waves. They’re not just performing; they’re producing, promoting, and mentoring the next generation.

Rethinking the Scene: Local Initiatives

Initiatives like Women in Music Malta are driving this change. Founded in 2019, the collective aims to empower women in the local music industry. They host workshops, panel discussions, and gigs, creating a supportive network for women to thrive.

Then there’s Her Sound Malta, a project dedicated to amplifying women’s voices in music. They’ve collaborated with local festivals like Isles of Creativity to showcase female talent.

But it’s not just about women supporting women. Male allies are crucial too. “I’ve had amazing support from male colleagues and peers,” says Ann. “We need everyone on board to create real change.”

: Malta’s Musical Future

So, what does the future hold? More gigs, more diversity, more women in control of their narratives. As Karin puts it, “We’re not just here to make up the numbers. We’re here to lead, to inspire, to create.”

And what about that packed Cavalier? It’s happening. On March 26th, Women in Music Malta presents ‘Beyond March’, a celebration of women in music. It’s more than a gig; it’s a statement, a promise of things to come.

So, Malta, are you ready to turn up the volume on women in music?
