Massive sand sculptures are coming to Malta this summer
Sand Masterpieces Set to Transform Malta’s Beaches this Summer
Imagine strolling along Malta’s sun-kissed beaches this summer, only to be greeted by towering sand sculptures that seem to have leapt straight out of a fantasy world. Well, pack your beach towels and sunscreen, because that’s exactly what’s in store for us. Hot Malta can exclusively reveal that a team of international sand sculptors is descending upon our islands, armed with nothing but shovels and a whole lot of imagination.
From Sand to Art: Meet the Masters
Leading the charge is Dutch maestro, Wilfred Stijger. With over 25 years of experience, he’s turned sand into everything from mythical creatures to life-sized dinosaurs. Joining him is Canadian artist, Keldon Wright, known for his intricate, detailed work that often incorporates elements of pop culture. Rounding off the trio is local talent, Alexei Novikov, who’s no stranger to Malta’s shores, having wowed crowds at previous sand sculpture events.
Together, they’ll be turning Malta’s beaches into open-air galleries, creating sand sculptures that are as awe-inspiring as they are ephemeral. But how did this sand-tastic event come about?
From Concept to Sand: The Story Behind the Scenes
Malta’s very own sand sculpture enthusiast and event organiser, Mario Farrugia, is the brain behind this beachside bonanza. “I’ve always been fascinated by sand sculpting,” he says, “and I wanted to bring that fascination to Malta. I approached the local councils, and they were on board immediately. We’ve got some fantastic locations lined up – from Golden Bay to St. George’s Bay, and even a spot in Valletta.”
But what can we expect from these sand sculptors? According to Farrugia, “Each artist has their own unique style. Wilfred’s work is often monumental in scale, while Keldon’s pieces are incredibly detailed. Alexei brings a touch of local flavour, incorporating Maltese themes into his art.”
And the best part? These masterpieces won’t cost a thing to enjoy. “We want everyone to be able to appreciate these amazing artworks,” says Farrugia. “So, entry will be free for all. Just bring yourselves, and maybe a camera to capture the magic.”
Mark Your Calendars: When and Where to Catch the Action
The event kicks off in early July, with sculptures popping up at different locations around the islands over the course of a month. Here’s a sneak peek at the schedule:
