Din l-Art Ħelwa: Malta’s Cultural Gem Wins European Award
Din l-Art Ħelwa: Malta’s Cultural Gem Shines in Europe
Imagine the grand halls of the European Commission in Brussels, where the hum of international affairs usually echoes. Now, picture a Maltese organisation, not a political body or a corporate giant, but a humble cultural NGO, standing tall among the continent’s elite. This is not a dream, but the reality of Din l-Art Ħelwa, honoured with the prestigious European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award.
From Valletta’s Streets to Brussels’ Spotlight
Din l-Art Ħelwa, Malta’s leading heritage NGO, has been making waves in the cultural scene since 1965. From restoring Valletta’s historic buildings to organising cultural events like the annual Notte Bianca, they’ve been the heartbeat of Malta’s cultural revival. But their latest achievement has taken them from the cobbled streets of our capital to the grand stage of Europe.
On the 18th of October, Din l-Art Ħelwa was awarded the European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award for their exceptional work in restoring and revitalising the historic building known as ‘Il-Ġimgħa tal-Belt’ or ‘The Gateway to Valletta’. This 16th-century structure, located at the entrance to the capital’s main street, Triq ir-Repubblika, has been transformed into a vibrant cultural hub, housing the organisation’s headquarters and a public art gallery.
The European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award
The European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award is the highest recognition for cultural heritage achievements in Europe. It celebrates outstanding efforts in conservation, research, and education, promoting a shared sense of European identity and cultural diversity. Din l-Art Ħelwa’s award is a testament to Malta’s rich cultural heritage and the organisation’s dedication to preserving it.
“This award is not just for Din l-Art Ħelwa, but for Malta,” said Anthony F. Camilleri, the organisation’s President. “It’s a recognition of our cultural heritage and it for future generations.”
Malta’s Cultural Diplomacy on the European Stage
Din l-Art Ħelwa’s award is not just a feather in their cap, but a beacon of Malta’s cultural diplomacy on the European stage. It underscores our small nation’s outsized impact on the continent’s cultural scene. The award also comes at a crucial time, as Malta prepares to take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2027.
“This award is a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together to preserve our cultural heritage,” said José Manuel Durão Barroso, former President of the European Commission and Chair of the Europa Nostra Board. “Din l-Art Ħelwa’s work is an inspiration for us all.”
As we look to the future, let’s remember that our cultural heritage is not just our past, but our present and our future. It’s what connects us, defines us, and makes us unique. And organisations like Din l-Art Ħelwa are the guardians of this heritage, ensuring that it continues to enrich our lives and inspire future generations.
So, let’s celebrate this remarkable achievement. Let’s celebrate Din l-Art Ħelwa, our cultural gem that’s shining bright on the European stage. And let’s continue to support and cherish our cultural heritage, because it’s ours to protect and ours to share.
