Cassola Book Launch in Corfu Draws Over 100 of Maltese Descent

Malta’s Literary Pride: Cassola’s Echoes Resonate in Corfu

Corfu, Greece, was not always the first place that comes to mind when thinking about Maltese literature. Yet, on a balmy evening in late June, the island’s cultural ties to Malta were strengthened as over 100 people of Maltese descent gathered to celebrate the launch of a new book by Maltese author Immanuel Mifsud.

Cassola’s Legacy Lives On

The book, titled ‘Cassola: A Life in Writing’, is a critical biography of the late Maltese writer Francis Ebejer, better known by his pen name, Fransizz Cassola. Mifsud, a renowned writer and academic himself, has woven a compelling narrative that delves into Cassola’s life, his works, and his enduring impact on Maltese literature.

Cassola, who passed away in 2018, was a giant in Maltese literature. His works, including ‘L-Kurċata’ and ‘Il-Gżira Preċentiment’, continue to inspire and influence local writers. Mifsud’s book is not just a tribute to Cassola but a testament to the power of Maltese literature to transcend borders and resonate with readers across the globe.

Malta Meets Corfu

The book launch, held at the Corfu Reading Society, was more than just an event. It was a reunion of sorts, a coming together of Maltese expats, locals with Maltese roots, and literary enthusiasts. The event was organized by the Malta High Commission in Greece, with the support of the Malta Tourism Authority and the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts.

Among the attendees were Malta’s Ambassador to Greece, Maria Deguara Vella, and Malta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion, Ian Borg, who joined virtually. The event was also graced by the presence of Maltese writer and academic, Dr. Albert Marshall, who delivered the introductory remarks.

The Corfu Reading Society, a historic building located in the heart of Corfu’s old town, provided the perfect backdrop for the event. The building, with its rich history and architectural charm, is a stark reminder of the deep cultural ties that bind Malta and Greece.

Cassola’s Echoes in Corfu

The launch was not just about celebrating Cassola’s life and works. It was also about fostering cultural ties between Malta and Greece. As Mifsud read excerpts from his book, the audience was transported to Malta, to the streets of Valletta and the rural landscapes of Gozo, so vividly described in Cassola’s works.

For many in the audience, the event was a chance to reconnect with their Maltese roots. For others, it was an opportunity to discover Maltese literature and culture. Whatever their reason for being there, everyone left with a deeper appreciation for Cassola’s works and the enduring power of Maltese literature.

As the evening drew to a close, the sound of applause filled the room. The launch of ‘Cassola: A Life in Writing’ was more than just an event. It was a testament to the power of literature to bridge cultures and bring people together. It was a celebration of Cassola’s legacy and a promise of Malta’s literary future.

As Mifsud signed copies of his book, he reflected on the evening, “Tonight, we’ve shown that Maltese literature can resonate beyond our shores. We’ve shown that our stories, our culture, our identity, can inspire and connect people across the Mediterranean.”
