Mario, a seasoned stage technician from Msida, had traveled to Rio with his team from Stagecraft Malta, a leading local events company. They were hired to set up the stage for Shakira’s highly anticipated concert at the Rock in Rio festival. Mario, with his 20 years of experience, was the team’s backbone, his expertise invaluable in ensuring the show would go on.

Mario’s journey was not an uncommon one. Malta’s events industry has long been exporting its talent and know-how to international stages. From the Malta International Fireworks Festival to the Tomorrowland main stage, our technicians have been making their mark worldwide. But this time, tragedy struck.

An Unthinkable Accident

On the evening of January 14, as the team was putting the final touches on the stage, disaster struck. A heavy lighting rig, weighing several tons, suddenly gave way, crushing Mario beneath it. Despite the frantic efforts of his colleagues and emergency services, Mario was pronounced dead at the scene.

The news through the close-knit community of Malta’s events industry. Mario was more than just a colleague; he was a mentor, a friend, a father figure to many. His loss was felt deeply, not just in Malta, but also among the international crew working on the festival.

Reactions and Support

Back home, tributes poured in from across the island. The Prime Minister, Robert Abela, offered his condolences, stating, “Mario’s death is a tragic reminder of the risks our workers take to bring joy and entertainment to others.” The Malta Entertainment Industry and Arts Association (MEIA) also released a statement, expressing their shock and offering support to Mario’s family and colleagues.
