Maltese Technician Dies in Rio: Shakira Concert Stage Tragedy

Tragedy in Rio: Maltese Technician Dies Preparing Shakira’s Stage

Imagine the bustling streets of Rio de Janeiro, the sun dipping below the Sugarloaf Mountain, and the anticipation building for a sold-out Shakira concert. Now, picture the stage, a grand structure of steel and lights, being meticulously assembled by a team of technicians, one of whom was Malta’s very own, Mario Azzopardi. This is where our story begins.

Mario’s Journey to Rio

Mario, a seasoned stage technician from Msida, had traveled to Rio with his team from Stagecraft Malta, a leading local events company. They were hired to set up the stage for Shakira’s highly anticipated concert at the Rock in Rio festival. Mario, with his 20 years of experience, was the team’s backbone, his expertise invaluable in ensuring the show would go on.

Mario’s journey was not an uncommon one. Malta’s events industry has long been exporting its talent and know-how to international stages. From the Malta International Fireworks Festival to the Tomorrowland main stage, our technicians have been making their mark worldwide. But this time, tragedy struck.

An Unthinkable Accident

On the evening of January 14, as the team was putting the final touches on the stage, disaster struck. A heavy lighting rig, weighing several tons, suddenly gave way, crushing Mario beneath it. Despite the frantic efforts of his colleagues and emergency services, Mario was pronounced dead at the scene.

The news through the close-knit community of Malta’s events industry. Mario was more than just a colleague; he was a mentor, a friend, a father figure to many. His loss was felt deeply, not just in Malta, but also among the international crew working on the festival.

Reactions and Support

Back home, tributes poured in from across the island. The Prime Minister, Robert Abela, offered his condolences, stating, “Mario’s death is a tragic reminder of the risks our workers take to bring joy and entertainment to others.” The Malta Entertainment Industry and Arts Association (MEIA) also released a statement, expressing their shock and offering support to Mario’s family and colleagues.

In Rio, the concert went ahead, but the mood was somber. Shakira herself dedicated the show to Mario, her voice echoing through the stadium as she sang, “This one’s for you, Mario. Rest in peace.”

Mario’s body was repatriated to Malta, where he was laid to rest in a ceremony attended by hundreds. His coffin, draped in the Maltese flag, was a poignant reminder of the human cost behind the glamour of the entertainment industry.

As we look ahead, Mario’s legacy lives on. His family has set up a foundation in his name, aiming to improve safety standards in the events industry. They hope that no other family will have to endure the pain they’ve gone through.

Mario’s death has underscored the need for strong safety measures in our industry. It’s a call to action for us all – to remember that behind every spectacular event, there are real people, with real lives, making real sacrifices. Let’s ensure that Mario’s sacrifice was not in vain.
