Malta Man jailed 12 years two decades after conspiring to trafficking cocaine

After 20 Years, Maltese Man Jailed for Drug Trafficking Conspiracy

After 20 Years, a Shadow from the Past Emerges

In the heart of Malta, at the bustling St. George’s Square in Valletta, life goes on as usual. The sun bakes the cobblestones, tourists snap photos, and locals go about their day. Yet, today, a shadow from the past has fallen over this vibrant scene. A man, once a familiar face in these parts, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. The crime? A cocaine trafficking conspiracy that took place two decades ago.

Unraveling the Web of the Past

Meet Joseph Xuereb, a 52-year-old man from the quiet town of Zebbug. In the late 90s, Xuereb was a small fish in a big pond, entangled in a web of international drug trafficking. The Malta Police Force, with the help of their Italian counterparts, have been unraveling this web for years. Today, after two decades of investigations and court proceedings, justice has finally caught up with Xuereb.

Xuereb was found guilty of conspiring to import and supply cocaine, with a street value of over €1 million. The drugs were meant to flood the streets of Malta and Italy, but thanks to the relentless efforts of law enforcement, they never made it past the port of Valletta.

Justice Delayed, Not Denied

Xuereb’s conviction is a testament to the long arm of the law. It sends a clear message to those who think they can evade justice by hiding behind time. “Justice might be slow, but it’s not blind,” said Superintendent Peter Zammit, leading the case for the Malta Police. “We never gave up on this case, and we’re proud to have finally brought Xuereb to justice.”

This case also highlights the international cooperation that’s crucial in the fight against transnational crime. The Malta Police worked hand in hand with their Italian counterparts, exchanging information and resources across borders. “It’s a victory not just for Malta, but for all the countries involved in this investigation,” said Zammit.

As Xuereb begins his 12-year sentence, the streets of Malta remain safe from the drugs he once sought to peddle. The Malta Police Force continues to vigilantly guard our islands, ensuring that no one can use them as a gateway for illicit activities. As for Xuereb, he’ll have plenty of time to reflect on the choices that led him here, and the life he could have had if he’d chosen a different path.

“Today, we celebrate justice,” said Zammit. “Tomorrow, we continue our fight against crime. Because our streets deserve to be safe, and our communities deserve to live in peace.”
