Bonnici: MIDI Would Have Fought for Manoel Island in Court
Bonnici’s Courtroom Vow: ‘MIDI Would Have Fought for Manoel Island’
Imagine standing on the shores of Marsamxett Harbour, the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. Now, picture a future where the iconic Manoel Island, a stone’s throw away, is transformed into a bustling commercial hub, its historic charm replaced by towering skyscrapers. This was the vision that Owen Bonnici, former Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government, was set to contest.
Manoel Island: A Battle of Titans
Manoel Island, a jewel in Malta’s crown, has long been a bone of contention. The Malta Industrial Development Corporation (MIDI) had plans to develop the island into a mixed-use project, complete with offices, retail spaces, and residential units. However, the proposed development sparked outrage among environmentalists and heritage enthusiasts, who argued that the project would destroy the island’s unique character and ecology.
Enter Owen Bonnici, who, during his tenure, was a vocal opponent of MIDI’s plans. In an interview with Hot Malta, he revealed, “Manoel Island is not just another piece of land. It’s a part of our history, our culture, our identity. MIDI would have obviously fought for it in court. We would have argued that the development goes against the principles of sustainable development and heritage conservation.”
Bonnici’s Vision: A Green, Cultural Hub
Bonnici’s vision for Manoel Island was starkly different from MIDI’s. He envisioned a green, cultural hub, where the island’s rich history and natural beauty were preserved and celebrated. “We could have turned it into a world-class cultural destination,” he said, “A place where people could learn about our history, enjoy our heritage, and appreciate our natural beauty.”
Bonnici’s plans included the restoration of the island’s historic buildings, the creation of public spaces for cultural events, and the preservation of the island’s unique ecosystem. He believed that this approach would not only protect Manoel Island’s heritage but also create a sustainable, eco-friendly tourist attraction.
: The Battle for Manoel Island Continues
While Bonnici’s tenure as Minister has ended, the battle for Manoel Island continues. The current government has given the green light to MIDI’s development plans, sparking fresh protests from environmental groups. However, Bonnici remains hopeful. “Manoel Island is too important to be lost to greed and shortsightedness,” he said, “I believe that, in the end, common sense and respect for our heritage will prevail.”
As the sun sets over Marsamxett Harbour, casting its golden rays on Manoel Island, the future of this historic gem remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: the fight to preserve its unique character and heritage is far from over.
