Sip & Swirl: Sannat’s Wine Festival Returns
Sip and Swirl: Sannat’s Sixth Annual Wine Festival Uncorked
Imagine strolling along the sun-kissed streets of Sannat, the scent of ripe grapes and freshly baked pastizzi wafting through the air. This isn’t just a scene from a postcard, but a reality that awaits you at the sixth edition of Sannat’s Wine Festival. This year, from October 15th to 17th, the quaint village in Malta’s northwest will once again transform into a wine lover’s paradise.
Vintage Vibes: A Brief History
The Sannat Wine Festival, now a staple on Malta’s cultural calendar, was first poured in 2016. It’s a celebration of the village’s rich vinicultural heritage, dating back to the Knights of St. John who introduced viticulture to the island. Today, Sannat is home to several vineyards, including the renowned Tal-Massar Winery, which will be a key player at this year’s festival.
Uncorking the Programme
This year’s festival promises a programme as strong as a full-bodied red. Kicking off on Friday evening, the streets will come alive with live music, traditional Maltese food stalls, and, of course, wine tasting. The main event takes place on Saturday, with the ‘Wine Trail’ – a self-guided tour of Sannat’s vineyards and wine cellars. Here, you can learn about the wine-making process, chat with local winemakers, and sample a variety of local wines.
Sunday winds down with a family-friendly ‘Wine and Art’ event, where you can enjoy local art exhibitions while sipping on your favourite tipple. And if you’re feeling adventurous, why not join the ‘Wine and History’ tour, exploring Sannat’s historical sites with a glass of wine in hand?
Wine and Dine: Local Flavours
No wine festival is complete without a symphony of flavours. Sannat’s eateries will be serving up special menus, featuring traditional Maltese dishes with a modern twist. Think: ravioli filled with local cheese and paired with a crisp white, or perhaps a hearty beef stew accompanied by a rich, full-bodied red.
And if you’re keen to bring a taste of Sannat home, many of the village’s shops will be selling locally produced wine, honey, and other delicacies. It’s a perfect opportunity to stock up on unique souvenirs and support local producers.
So, mark your calendars, gather your friends, and get ready to raise a glass to Sannat’s sixth annual Wine Festival. Cheers!
