Malta’s Early Voting Arrangements: What You Need to Know

Early Birds: Electoral Commission Unveils Voting Arrangements for 2023

Imagine this: it’s a sunny morning in Msida, and you’re sipping your coffee, checking your watch, and thinking, “I wish I could vote right now.” Well, soon you might be able to. The Electoral Commission has just announced early voting arrangements for the upcoming 2023 elections, giving voters more flexibility to cast their ballots.

What’s New in Early Voting?

The Electoral Commission has introduced a new system that allows voters to cast their ballots up to five days before the actual election day. This is a significant change from the previous system, where early voting was only possible on the day before the election.

Here’s a quick rundown of the new early voting periods:

    • For the local council elections, early voting will be held from Monday, 27th March to Friday, 31st March 2023.
    • For the European Parliament elections, early voting will be held from Monday, 22nd May to Friday, 26th May 2023.

Where and How to Vote Early

Early voting will take place at designated polling stations across Malta and Gozo. The Electoral Commission will announce the specific locations in the coming weeks, but they’ve assured us that these will be conveniently located and easily accessible.

Voters will need to present their ID card or passport to vote. If you’re voting early, you’ll still need to vote in your designated ward or district, just like on election day.

Why the Change?

The Electoral Commission has made this change to increase voter participation and convenience. With busy schedules and commitments, many voters struggle to find the time to vote on election day. Early voting aims to make the voting process more accessible and flexible.

Dr. Joe Gerada, Chairman of the Electoral Commission, said, “We believe that these changes will encourage more people to vote. We want to make the voting process as convenient as possible for everyone.”

So, Msida residents, mark your calendars. Next March, you might just be able to vote while enjoying your morning coffee.
