Marsascala Gang Rape: Five Charged as Police Warn of More Victims

Five in Custody as Marsascala Gang Rape Probe Widens

MARSAASCALA – The small fishing village of Marsascala, known for its tranquil bays and vibrant local life, is grappling with a grim reality this week. Five individuals have been remanded in custody, accused of gang rape, as police warn that more victims may come forward.

Arrests and Charges

In a series of early morning raids on Tuesday, police arrested five men, all residents of Marsascala, in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old woman. The victim, a local resident, reported the incident to police last week. The five accused, aged between 19 and 25, were charged in court later that day and remanded in custody pending further investigations.

The charges, according to court documents, include rape, sexual assault, and acts of indecency. The alleged incidents occurred at a residence in Triq il-Kbira, Marsascala, over the course of several months.

Community Shock and Police Appeal

News of the arrests has through the tight-knit community of Marsascala. Residents, known for their strong sense of community and neighbourly spirit, are struggling to come to terms with the allegations. “It’s unimaginable that something like this could happen here,” said a local shopkeeper, who wished to remain anonymous.

Marsascala’s Mayor, Norman Zammit, expressed his shock and disgust at the allegations. “Our community is in a state of shock. We pride ourselves on our strong family values and community spirit. These allegations are a stain on our community,” he said.

Police, meanwhile, have appealed to anyone with information about the case or any other similar incidents to come forward. “We believe there may be more victims out there,” said a police spokesperson. “We urge anyone with information to contact us. Your information could be crucial in bringing justice to the victims.”

The police hotline number is 119.

Support Services

In the wake of these allegations, local support services have been inundated with calls. Dar tal-Providenza, a local charity that supports victims of sexual abuse, has urged anyone affected by these incidents to reach out. “We are here to listen and support,” said a spokesperson. “Please, don’t suffer in silence.”

Dar tal-Providenza can be reached on 2166 0100.
