Għajnsielem Association Celebrates 10 Years of Unity

Għajnsielem Association Marks a Decade: A Village United

In the heart of Gozo, under the watchful gaze of the Azure Window (now the Azure Window Arch), a unique celebration is unfolding. The Għajnsielem Association, a pillar of the local community, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. But what makes this milestone truly special is not just the number of years, but the spirit of unity and resilience it embodies.

From Humble Beginnings to a Village Voice

The Għajnsielem Association was born out of a simple idea in 2012, around a kitchen table on Triq San Gorg, the village’s main street. A group of passionate locals wanted to preserve their heritage, promote their community, and foster a sense of belonging. Little did they know that their humble gathering would grow into a powerful voice for Għajnsielem.

Today, the association boasts over 200 members, each contributing their unique skills and perspectives. From organizing cultural events to advocating for local causes, they’ve left an indelible mark on the village. Their annual Għajnsielem Festa, a vibrant celebration of faith, food, and folklore, is a testament to their impact.

Uniting in the Face of Adversity

In 2017, when the Azure Window collapsed, it was a devastating blow to the island. But the Għajnsielem Association turned this tragedy into an opportunity. They led the charge in preserving the arch that remained, turning it into a symbol of resilience and hope. Their efforts culminated in the Azure Window Arch being declared a protected site.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic. The association quickly adapted, shifting their focus to supporting vulnerable members and promoting virtual events. They even launched a ‘Għajnsielem Together’ initiative, delivering essentials to those in need. Through it all, they’ve shown that even when physically apart, the spirit of Għajnsielem remains united.

A Decade of Achievements and

The association’s achievements are many. They’ve restored historic buildings, improved infrastructure, and even launched a successful campaign to reduce littering. But they’re not content to rest on their laurels. As they celebrate their 10th anniversary, they’re to the next decade.

“We’ve come a long way, but there’s still so much to do,” says association president, Mario Vella. “We want to build on our successes, engage more young people, and continue making Għajnsielem a place we’re all proud to call home.”

And so, under the watchful gaze of the Azure Window Arch, the Għajnsielem Association embarks on its second decade. Not just as an association, but as a symbol of unity, resilience, and progress. A beacon of hope for the future of Għajnsielem.
