Abbey Road’s Final Note: The Beatles’ Last Gig Site to House First Museum
Imagine walking down the iconic Abbey Road, the very street where The Beatles took their final bow. Now, picture a museum standing in its place, preserving the legacy of the Fab Four. This isn’t a dream; it’s happening right on our doorstep, or rather, London’s.
From ‘Get Back’ to ‘Get In’: The Museum’s Journey
The Beatles’ rooftop concert on 30 January 1969 marked their last live performance together. Now, half a century later, the same site at 3 Savile Row will host their first official museum. The ‘Get Back to Abbey Road’ project, led by Beatles’ fan and property developer Joe Cohen, aims to transform the building into a immersive, interactive experience.
Cohen, a Malta-based businessman with a passion for preserving music history, plans to recreate the rooftop scene, complete with a life-sized replica of the band’s equipment. “It’s about more than just displaying artifacts,” Cohen says. “We want visitors to feel like they’re stepping into a piece of music history.”
Malta’s Connection: Bringing the Beat Home
While the museum is set in London, it’s got Malta written all over it. Cohen, a Maltese national, is leading the project, and he’s not the only local with a stake. Malta-based architect Alex Dimech is on board to help bring Cohen’s vision to life. “It’s an honour to be part of this project,” Dimech says. “It’s not just about preserving The Beatles’ legacy; it’s about creating a space that reflects their spirit and inspires future generations.”
the project is expected to draw tourists from around the world, including Malta. “We’re hoping to see Maltese fans making the trip to London to experience the museum,” Cohen says. “And who knows? Maybe we’ll even see some Beatlemania-inspired events back home.”
With construction set to begin later this year, the museum is expected to open its doors in 2023. Until then, Beatles fans can only imagine the magic that’s about to unfold at 3 Savile Row. But one thing’s for sure: the spirit of Abbey Road is about to get a whole lot louder.
