Żabbar Council Rescues Hompesch Theatre from Development

In the heart of Malta’s Three Cities, the echo of a once-thriving theatre has fallen silent. But now, a local council is stepping in to save the Hompesch Theatre from potential development, buying the historic building in a bid to restore its former glory.

Reviving a Cultural Gem

The Hompesch Theatre, nestled in Żabbar, has been a silent witness to Malta’s rich history and culture. Built in the 18th century, it was once a bustling hub for local theatre and music. However, years of neglect have left the theatre in a state of disrepair, its stage now silent, its walls echoing with memories of past performances.

But Żabbar’s local council has other plans. In a move that has sparked hope among local cultural enthusiasts, the council has purchased the theatre, aiming to breathe new life into this historic gem. “We couldn’t let this piece of our cultural heritage be lost,” said Żabbar Mayor, Doris Abela. “The Hompesch Theatre is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of our past, and it deserves to be a part of our future.”

From Neglect to New Beginnings

The theatre’s decline has been a slow one. Over the years, it has changed hands multiple times, with each new owner promising restoration, but none following through. The building has stood empty, its once vibrant interior fading, its exterior crumbling under the Mediterranean sun.

But now, with the council at the helm, there’s a new sense of optimism. Plans are underway to restore the theatre to its former glory, with a focus on preserving its historic charm while also making it a functional space for future generations. “We want to create a cultural hub that the whole community can enjoy,” said Abela. “A place where our children and grandchildren can experience the magic of theatre, just as we once did.”

Community Support and Challenges Ahead

The council’s decision has been met with widespread support from the local community. A petition to save the theatre, started by local resident and theatre enthusiast, Joseph Xuereb, gathered over 2,000 signatures in just a few weeks. “The Hompesch Theatre is a part of Żabbar’s identity,” said Xuereb. “We can’t let it disappear.”

However, the road to restoration won’t be easy. The theatre requires significant investment and careful planning to ensure its historic features are preserved. The council is currently seeking funding from various sources, including the Malta Arts Council and the European Union’s cultural heritage fund.

“We’re determined to see this through,” said Abela. “We’ve come this far because of the community’s support, and we won’t let them down. Together, we’ll bring the Hompesch Theatre back to life.”
