Prosecutors Conclude Case Against Driver in Deadly Valletta Crash

Valletta’s narrow streets, usually bustling with life, fell silent on that fateful evening. The usually vibrant Republic Street was cordoned off, emergency lights flickering against the ancient stone buildings. A fatal crash had left a city centre in shock and a family in mourning.

Revisiting the Tragic Night

It was around 10 pm on a Tuesday in late March when a car, speeding down Republic Street, lost control and mounted the pavement. The devastating impact claimed the life of a 55-year-old pedestrian, a beloved local resident. The driver, a 27-year-old man from Msida, was arrested at the scene and later charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Prosecution’s Case Unfolds

The prosecution team, led by Magistrate Dr. Donatella Frendo Dimech, presented their case over several court sessions. Witnesses, including eyewitnesses to the crash, testified about the driver’s alleged reckless behaviour. Forensic evidence, including data from the vehicle’s black box, was also presented to support the prosecution’s argument.

Prosecutors painted a picture of a driver who was not only speeding but also under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The driver’s blood test results, revealed in court, showed high levels of both substances. The prosecution argued that this combination of recklessness and impairment led to the tragic outcome.

Defence’s Counterarguments

The defence, led by lawyer Gianluca Caruana Curran, argued that the driver’s actions were not premeditated. They contended that the driver had not intended to cause harm and that the crash was a result of a momentary lapse in judgment. The defence also questioned the reliability of the blood test results, suggesting that the samples may have been contaminated.

The defence also raised the issue of road conditions, suggesting that the narrow streets of Valletta, combined with the lack of street lighting in certain areas, could have contributed to the crash. They argued that the driver, a local resident, was familiar with the streets and would not have been driving recklessly had the road conditions been better.

With the prosecution having rested their case, the court will now consider the evidence presented. The judge will decide whether there is a case to answer and, if so, whether the case should proceed to a full trial. The family of the victim, who have been present in court throughout the proceedings, await the court’s decision with heavy hearts.

“Justice for our loved one is all we want,” said the victim’s daughter outside the court. “We hope that today’s proceedings bring us one step closer to that.”

The driver, meanwhile, remains on bail, with his liberty hanging in the balance. His fate, and that of the victim’s family, now lies in the hands of the court.
