Explosion, Fire Engulf Birkirkara House
Smoke Plume Over Birkirkara: Explosion and Fire Engulf House
As the sun began to set over Birkirkara on Tuesday evening, residents were met with an unexpected sight: a massive plume of smoke billowing into the sky from a house on Triq l-Imqabba. The explosion and subsequent fire through the usually peaceful neighbourhood, leaving residents shaken and curious.
Blast and Flames: The Initial Scene
Emergency services rushed to the scene, finding a house engulfed in flames. The explosion had shattered windows and scattered debris across the street, with some reports suggesting it was heard from as far away as Msida. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours, ensuring it didn’t spread to nearby houses.
“I was in my backyard when I heard this massive boom,” said Joe, a long-time Birkirkara resident who wished to keep his last name private. “I ran out and saw the house on fire. It was terrifying. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Investigation Uncovers Gas Leak
The cause of the explosion was later found to be a gas leak, according to a statement from Enemalta, Malta’s national electricity generation and transmission utility. The leak had built up in the house, leading to the explosion and fire. No one was injured in the incident, although the house was left severely damaged.
“We’re just grateful no one was hurt,” said the house’s owner, who asked not to be named. “We’re still trying to figure out what happened, but we’re just thankful it wasn’t worse.”
Residents React: Safety Concerns and Solidarity
The incident has sparked conversations among Birkirkara residents about safety and maintenance. Some have expressed concerns about the age of their own houses and the potential for similar incidents. Others have praised the quick response of emergency services.
“It’s scary to think something like this could happen,” said Maria, another Birkirkara resident. “But it’s also a reminder of how lucky we are to have such great emergency services. They were here in minutes.”
As the house is assessed and repaired, the community has rallied around the owners, offering support and assistance. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with rebuilding costs, with many neighbours contributing.
“This is Birkirkara,” said Joe. “We look out for each other. When something like this happens, we come together.”
