Malta’s Unsung Innovator: Alex Borg

Alex Borg: Malta’s Unsung Innovator

In the heart of Valletta, at the bustling St. George’s Square, a familiar figure can often be seen. Alex Borg, a man of unassuming demeanor, is the brain behind some of Malta’s most innovative solutions. Yet, he’s not one to seek the limelight. “They criticise us, then they copy us,” he says with a wry smile, referring to the local reaction to his groundbreaking ideas.

From Streetlights to Smart Cities

Borg’s journey began in the late 1990s when he introduced Malta’s first solar-powered streetlights. Despite initial skepticism, the lights were a resounding success, saving the government thousands in energy costs. Today, they light up streets across the island, from the quiet lanes of Mdina to the bustling roads of Sliema. But Borg wasn’t content to stop at streetlights.

He went on to develop Malta’s first smart city project, SmartCity Malta, a €100 million venture in collaboration with the government. The project, located in the heart of the Tigné Point development, aims to create a sustainable, tech-driven urban hub. It’s a bold vision that’s putting Malta on the global smart city map.

Borg’s Impact Beyond Borders

Borg’s innovations haven’t gone unnoticed internationally. He was recently invited to speak at the United Nations about Malta’s smart city initiatives. His work has also caught the eye of global tech giants. “We’ve had interest from companies like Google and IBM,” he reveals, though he’s tight-lipped about any potential collaborations.

Back home, Borg’s influence can be seen in various government initiatives. The recent launch of the Malta Digital Innovation Authority, aimed at promoting blockchain technology, is a testament to his impact. “We’re seeing a shift in mindset,” he says, “Malta is finally embracing innovation.”

Yet, Borg remains humble about his achievements. “I’m just a small fish in a big pond,” he insists. But for Malta, he’s a breakthrough, a local hero whose innovations are transforming the island into a global tech hub.
