Vittoriosa’s Pjazza: Malta’s Global Design Gem
Vittoriosa’s Pjazza transforms into global design gem
Picture this: A once bustling, yet somewhat forgotten, square in the heart of Vittoriosa. Now, imagine it as a global design sensation, featured in international publications and drawing visitors from across the globe. This is not a fairytale, but the remarkable transformation of Pjazza San Ġorġ in Vittoriosa.
From forgotten to fabulous
Pjazza San Ġorġ, named after the patron saint of Malta, was once a typical Maltese square, with a few cafes, a church, and a statue at its centre. However, it was overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, the Grandmaster’s Palace. That was until the Vittoriosa Local Council and the Malta Tourism Authority decided to give it a facelift.
The transformation began in 2019, with a €1.5 million project that aimed to create a welcoming, multi-purpose space. The result? A stunning, modern square that has put Vittoriosa on the global design map.
Design that speaks volumes
The new Pjazza San Ġorġ is a masterclass in modern design. The centrepiece is a striking, undulating bench designed by local architect Richard England. It’s made from recycled materials and pays homage to the waves of the Mediterranean Sea. Surrounding it are lush, landscaped gardens, and a stage area for cultural events.
But what really sets this square apart is its innovative use of lighting. At night, the bench and surrounding trees are illuminated by a mesmerising light show, created by local artist Matthew Attard. It’s a spectacle that has to be seen to be believed.
Global recognition
Pjazza San Ġorġ’s transformation hasn’t gone unnoticed. It’s been featured in international publications like The Guardian and Architectural Digest. It’s also been nominated for several prestigious awards, including the European Prize for Urban Public Space.
But perhaps the most telling sign of its success is the reaction from locals and visitors alike. The square is now a bustling hub, filled with people enjoying a coffee, a concert, or just a moment of tranquility.
“It’s incredible to see how our little square has become such a big deal,” says Mario Vella, a Vittoriosa resident. “It’s not just a place to sit anymore. It’s a destination.”
Visiting Pjazza San Ġorġ
Pjazza San Ġorġ is located in the heart of Vittoriosa, just a short walk from the Grandmaster’s Palace. It’s open 24/7, but the best time to visit is in the evening, when the light show is in full swing.
And if you’re feeling hungry, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby, serving up traditional Maltese cuisine. Our pick? Il-Kantunera, a cozy eatery serving up delicious pastizzi and other Maltese delicacies.
