Alex Borg: Turning Criticism into Imitation

Alex Borg: From Criticism to Imitation

In the heart of Malta’s bustling Republic Street, a stone’s throw from the iconic Grandmaster’s Palace, you’ll find Alex Borg’s flagship store. It’s a vibrant hub of activity, a testament to the man’s entrepreneurial spirit and his ability to weather criticism. “They criticise us, then they copy us,” Alex Borg chuckles, reflecting on his journey as a local businessman and innovator.

From Humble Beginnings to Retail Revolution

Alex Borg’s story is one of humble beginnings. Born and raised in the small town of Żebbuġ, he started his first business at the age of 19, selling clothes from a market stall in Mosta. Today, his retail empire spans multiple stores across Malta, including the sprawling Borg & Brogs outlet in the Tigné Point shopping complex.

Borg’s rise to success hasn’t been without its critics. His unique business model – offering high-quality, trendy clothing at affordable prices – has ruffled feathers among traditional retailers. Yet, Borg remains unfazed. “Criticism is part of the game,” he says, “It means you’re doing something right.”

Innovation and Imitation

Borg’s stores are not just about selling clothes; they’re experiences. His flagship store in Valletta is a three-story emporium of fashion, with a café and even a photo studio. “We want our customers to feel special,” Borg explains. “We want them to enjoy their shopping experience.”

Other local retailers have taken notice. In recent years, several have begun to mimic Borg’s model, incorporating cafés and other attractions into their stores. Borg, however, sees this not as competition, but as validation. “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” he says with a smile.

Giving Back to the Community

Borg’s success hasn’t made him forget his roots. He’s actively involved in community initiatives, from supporting local charities to sponsoring sports teams. His annual ‘Borg & Brogs Day’ event, held in Żebbuġ, is a celebration of his hometown and its people.

“I believe in giving back,” Borg says. “Malta has given me so much, it’s only right that I give something back.”

As we wrap up our conversation, Borg looks out at the bustling street outside. “Malta is changing,” he says, “And I’m proud to be a part of that change. We’re not just a little island anymore. We’re a force to be reckoned with.”

And with that, Alex Borg, the man who turned criticism into imitation, gets back to work, ready to face whatever challenges – and imitators – the future may bring.
