Birkirkara House Explosion: Cause Under Investigation
Blast and Blaze: Birkirkara House Explosion Rocks Quiet Neighbourhood
At precisely 11:47 AM yesterday, the usually tranquil Triq l-Imqabba in Birkirkara was shattered by a deafening explosion. A house, nestled among its neighbours, was engulfed in flames, sending plumes of smoke billowing into the clear blue sky. Neighbours, startled by the sudden commotion, rushed out to witness the scene unfold.
Emergency Response
Within minutes, the Maltese emergency services were on the scene. Firefighters from the Birkirkara and Santa Venera stations battled the blaze, while an ambulance crew attended to a woman who had suffered minor injuries. The police cordoned off the area, diverting traffic away from the chaos.
“I was in my kitchen when I heard this massive bang,” said Maria, a long-time resident of Triq l-Imqabba. “I ran out and saw the house on fire. It was terrifying.”
Cause of the Explosion
The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but early reports suggest it may have been a gas leak. “We’re treating this as a gas-related incident until we have evidence to the contrary,” said a spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department.
Enemalta, Malta’s electricity generation and distribution company, confirmed that they had been called to the scene to assist with the investigation. “We’re working closely with the Civil Protection Department to determine the cause of the explosion,” said a spokesperson.
Aftermath and Support
The fire was brought under control within an hour, but not before causing significant damage to the house. The woman who was injured was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported.
Residents have been left shaken by the incident. “We’re just glad no one was seriously hurt,” said another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous. “It could have been so much worse.”
Councillor for Birkirkara, Mario Fava, visited the scene and offered his support to the affected family. “Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time,” he said. “We’re doing everything we can to support them and ensure their safety.”
