Car Goes Up in Flames on Triq San Gwann: Motorist Rescued in Dramatic Scene

It was a scene straight out of a Hollywood action movie, but it unfolded on a quiet stretch of Triq San Gwann in Msida yesterday afternoon. A car, speeding around a bend, lost control and crashed into a wall, bursting into flames within seconds. The motorist, however, was rescued in a dramatic display of quick thinking and bravery by passersby and emergency services.

Witnesses Spring into Action

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing incident, describing how the car, a silver Ford Fiesta, appeared to be traveling at high speed before it suddenly veered off the road and crashed into a low wall surrounding a residential property. “It happened so fast,” said Joe Borg, a local resident who was among the first to react. “I heard the screech of tires and then a loud bang. By the time I got to the car, it was already on fire.”

Borg, along with a few other bystanders, quickly sprang into action. They managed to pull the driver, a man in his late 30s, out of the burning vehicle through the passenger side door. “He was unconscious and there was no time to lose,” Borg recalled. “We dragged him away from the car just as the flames started to spread.”

Emergency Services Arrive on Scene

Within minutes, emergency services arrived at the scene. The Malta Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) quickly extinguished the blaze, while an ambulance crew attended to the injured motorist. Dr. Matthew Aquilina, a paramedic at the scene, praised the witnesses’ quick response. “Their swift action likely saved the man’s life,” he said. “By the time we arrived, the car was fully engulfed in flames. It could have been much worse.”

The motorist was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Police are investigating the cause of the crash and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Road Safety in Malta: A Growing Concern

This incident highlights a growing concern in Malta – road safety. According to the Malta Police, there have been over 1,500 road traffic accidents in the first six months of this year alone, a figure that has raised alarm bells among road safety advocates. “We need to do more to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding and reckless driving,” said Dr. Maria Mifsud, a spokesperson for the Road Safety Council. “We’re seeing too many incidents like this one, and it’s only a matter of time before we have a tragedy on our hands.”

In the meantime, residents of Triq San Gwann are left to pick up the pieces. The crashed car left a significant dent in the wall surrounding the property it hit, and the smell of burnt rubber and fuel lingers in the air. But for the witnesses who bravely rescued the motorist, there’s a sense of relief that their quick thinking averted what could have been a far worse outcome.
