In the quiet, sun-kissed neighborhood of St. Julian’s, a family’s joyous afternoon by the pool turned into a harrowing ordeal yesterday. A four-year-old boy, identified only as M., slipped and fell into the deep end of their private swimming pool, leaving him in critical condition.

Emergency Response

Neighbors rushed to help after hearing the boy’s mother’s desperate cries for assistance. They quickly pulled the boy out of the water and immediately began administering CPR. The emergency services, alerted by a panicked 999 call, arrived swiftly at the scene on Triq il-Kappillan Santu.

Paramedics took over the resuscitation efforts and rushed the boy to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit. Doctors describe his condition as critical but stable.

Community in Shock

The close-knit community of St. Julian’s is reeling from the incident. Neighbors describe the family as loving and attentive, making the accident all the more shocking. “I can’t believe this happened,” said one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous. “They’re such a lovely family. We’re all praying for little M..”

Local councillor, Mark Anthony Bartolo, expressed his sympathies and called for increased pool safety awareness. “Our hearts go out to the family during this difficult time. We must remind ourselves that accidents can happen in an instant, and it’s crucial to always supervise children around water.”

Pool Safety Tips

In light of this tragedy, here are some pool safety tips to keep in mind:

    • Always supervise children around water, even if they know how to swim.
    • Install a fence around your pool with a self-closing, self-latching gate.
    • Remove any objects that could aid a child in climbing the fence.
    • Keep rescue equipment, such as a life ring or hook, near the pool.
    • Learn CPR and keep your certification up-to-date.

Let’s hope and pray that little M. makes a full recovery. In the meantime, let’s all do our part to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
