Gozo Motorcycle Accident: Man Injured in Xewkija

Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo’s Xewkija: What We Know So Far

As the sun set over the picturesque Xewkija Square, the peaceful evening was shattered by the screech of brakes and the crunch of metal. A motorcyclist lay injured on the road, the victim of a collision that has left the close-knit community of Gozo on edge.

The Incident at Xewkija Square

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred around 7:30 PM on Tuesday. A motorcyclist, later identified as a 35-year-old man from Xagħra, was traveling along Triq San Ġorġ when a car emerged from a side street, failing to give way. The motorcyclist, unable to avoid the collision, was thrown from his bike and landed heavily on the square’s cobblestones.

The square, usually bustling with locals and tourists, fell silent as passersby rushed to the injured man’s side. “It was terrifying,” said one witness, who wished to remain anonymous. “One moment he was riding, the next he was on the ground, not moving.”

Emergency Services Respond

Paramedics from the Gozo General Hospital arrived swiftly, stabilizing the injured man before transporting him to the hospital. His condition is described as stable, but serious. The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man from Victoria, was uninjured and is cooperating with police.

Inspector Joseph Camilleri of the Gozo Police Station told Hot Malta, “We are treating this as a serious road traffic accident. Our investigations are ongoing, and we appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.”

Road Safety in Gozo: A Growing Concern

This incident is the latest in a series of road accidents on Gozo that have raised concerns about road safety on the sister island. According to statistics from the Malta Police Force, road accidents on Gozo have increased by 15% in the past year, with many involving motorcyclists.

Gozo’s unique topography, with its narrow roads and sharp bends, presents challenges for both drivers and riders. “We need to address this issue urgently,” said Dr. Anton Refalo, a Gozitan resident and road safety advocate. “It’s not just about enforcement; it’s about education and infrastructure.”

Refalo points to the lack of dedicated motorcycle lanes and the need for better signage as contributing factors to the increase in accidents. “We need to make our roads safer for everyone,” he added.

Community Rallies Around Victim

News of the accident has spread like wildfire through the tight-knit Gozitan community. Messages of support and well-wishes have flooded social media, with many pledging to donate blood to help the injured motorcyclist.

Father Mario Attard, parish priest of Xewkija, told Hot Malta, “This is a stark reminder of the fragility of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured man and his family. We are a close community, and we will support him in any way we can.”

As the investigation continues, the community of Gozo waits with bated breath, hoping for a full recovery and justice served.
