Qormi Tops Malta in Early-Year Traffic Accidents

Qormi’s Road Safety Concern: A Spike in Early-Year Accidents

Picture this: The sun is barely up, and already, the bustling streets of Qormi are alive with the hum of traffic. Suddenly, a screech of brakes, a crunch of metal. Another accident in the ‘City of the Seven Hills’. It’s not an isolated incident. Qormi has seen a worrying spike in traffic accidents in the first three months of 2023.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

The Malta Police Force’s statistics paint a stark picture. Between January and March, Qormi topped the list of local councils with the most traffic accidents, with a total of 75 incidents. This is a 15% increase from the same period last year. The data reveals a worrying trend that needs our attention.

But why Qormi? The city, known for its rich history and vibrant culture, is also a hub of commercial activity. Its central location and proximity to major roads like Triq l-Imqabba and Triq San Girgor make it a busy thoroughfare. Add to that the influx of traffic from nearby industrial zones, and you’ve got a recipe for potential accidents.

Local Voices: Concerns and Solutions

We hit the streets of Qormi to gauge local sentiment. Shop owner Joseph from Triq San Girgor tells us, “I’ve noticed the increase in accidents. It’s worrying, especially with so many people using our streets for work and shopping.”

Resident Maria from Triq l-Imqabba suggests, “We need more traffic calming measures. Speed bumps, pedestrian crossings, anything to slow down traffic and make our streets safer.”

Qormi Local Council’s Mayor, George Grima, echoes these concerns. “We’re aware of the issue and are working on it. We’re planning to install more speed cameras and consider traffic calming measures. We urge drivers to be cautious and pedestrians to cross roads safely.”

What Can We Do?

So, what can we take away from this? As Qormi residents, we need to be more aware of our driving habits. As pedestrians, we must use crossings and follow road rules. Together, we can make our city safer.

Let’s not wait for another accident to happen. Let’s take responsibility, look out for each other, and make Qormi’s roads safer for everyone.
