Qormi Tops Malta in Road Accidents: What’s Behind the Numbers?

Qormi’s Road Safety Concern: A Closer Look at the Numbers

Picture this: It’s a sunny afternoon in Qormi, and you’re strolling down Triq San Girgor, the bustling heart of this historic town. You pass by the iconic Church of San Giorgio, the vibrant market, and the lively cafes. It’s a scene of life and activity, but it’s also a scene that’s seen more than its fair share of traffic accidents in recent months.

By the Numbers: Qormi Leads in Road Accidents

The Malta Police Force has just released data showing that Qormi topped the list of local councils with the most traffic accidents in the first three months of the year. With 117 accidents, Qormi beat out other towns like Birkirkara and Ħamrun. But what’s behind these numbers? And what can be done to improve road safety in this bustling town?

Understanding the Hotspots

Digging deeper into the data, we find that many of these accidents occurred in and around the town centre. Triq San Girgor, with its mix of residential, commercial, and historical buildings, is a particular hotspot. The busy junction at Triq il-Kbira and Triq San Girgor, where traffic from different directions converges, also saw a high number of incidents.

But it’s not just the town centre. Accidents also occurred along the main thoroughfares leading into Qormi, like Triq l-Imqades and Triq il-Wied. These roads, which connect Qormi to other towns and the capital, see heavy traffic, especially during peak hours.

Local Perspectives and Possible Solutions

We spoke to Qormi Local Council’s mayor, George Borg, who acknowledged the concern. “We’re aware of the situation and we’re working closely with the police to identify the root causes,” he said. “We believe that a combination of traffic calming measures, better enforcement, and public awareness campaigns can help reduce these accidents.”

Some residents and business owners we spoke to suggested installing speed cameras, improving road signs, and creating more pedestrian crossings. Others pointed to the need for better public transport to reduce the number of cars on the road.

Meanwhile, the Malta Police Force is urging drivers to be more cautious. “Speeding, not giving way, and using mobile phones while driving are some of the main causes of accidents,” said a police spokesperson. “We’re asking drivers to be more responsible and follow the rules of the road.”

: A Safer Qormi

Qormi’s road safety challenge is real, but it’s not insurmountable. With the local council, police, and community working together, we can make Qormi’s streets safer. Let’s hope that the next set of statistics tells a different story.

As the mayor put it, “Qormi is our home, and we want it to be a safe place for everyone. We’re committed to doing our part to make that happen.”
